Dear colleagues
We are currently living through unprecedented times as a result of the Coronavirus (Covid-19) outbreak. Our top priority is always the health and safety of students, staff and those who make up our wider community across the globe, and that includes students holding offers to study with us. We have been working to adapt our policies and procedures in light of the current circumstances and ensure that prospective students are not adversely affected. We're still accepting applications for 2020/21 and hope to begin the academic year as usual in September.
This newsletter contains information about our online pre-sessional English courses, changes to deposit deadlines and our deposit refund policy, as well as how our academics and researchers are working to tackle the Coronavirus outbreak. You can also read the latest FAQs for prospective students on our website.

Online pre-sessional English courses
|
Our English Language Teaching Centre will be delivering our pre-sessional English programmes online. Students will not require a UKVI SELT or visa to enrol on the online pre-sessional. Applications are now open, and existing pre-sessional applicants are being contacted to confirm whether they wish to transfer to the online programme. Successful completion of the pre-sessional programme will ensure students meet the English language requirements for their degree course at Sheffield. Assessment for the pre-sessional will be via coursework and online testing. Tuition fees for the pre-sessional are available on our website and reflect the continued high quality of education and support we provide to students.

|
Our ELTC is accredited by both the British Council and BALEAP. We are leaders in the field of online language learning; our Technology Enhanced Learning has been described as ‘’sector-leading” (latest BALEAP inspection) and it has been noted that our “impressive use of digital platforms put students at a great advantage when they progress onto their degree course”.
Please note, our pre-sessional programme is not available to candidates for other universities.

PGT deposit deadlines extended
|
We have extended the tuition fee deposit deadline for PGT courses which operate under staged admissions to give offer holders more time to make their decision and to be able to pay their deposits.
Offer holders issued with an original deadline of 11 April 2020 will now have until 26 May 2020 to pay their deposit. We will be emailing offer holders with the new deadline shortly.

Tuition fee deposit refund policy
|
We have updated our tuition fee deposit refund policy for 2020 entry to allow offer holders to request a refund if they are unable to start their course for any reason relating to the coronavirus outbreak. Full details of our refund policy are available on our website.
Offer holders who have been asked to pay a deposit by a certain date to secure their place should pay their deposit as requested as offers may be withdrawn if deposits are not paid by the deadlines.

We have been working to support our students, some of whom we know have returned to their home countries. We want to reassure you that we continue to provide student support online and teaching and assessments will also be delivered online.
Our Digital Learning team and IT services are supporting academic colleagues to make this transition and have also developed guidance for students. If students cannot easily access their university email account, they can add a personal email address to our online learning environment so that they can easily receive important course notifications and departmental communications.
Our International Student Support team will continue to be available to support students through email, Google Hangouts and Skype and international students can book appointments for Visa Extension and Advice.
We are in regular contact with all students to keep them up to date with the latest news and advice and FAQs for current students are available here.

Working together in the fight against coronavirus
|
Scientists and clinicians from the University of Sheffield and Sheffield Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust have joined a UK consortium to map how COVID-19 (coronavirus) spreads and behaves. Backed by the UK government, a £20 million investment will allow the consortium to work together - and through whole genome sequencing - to create valuable intelligence that could provide breakthroughs in how to fight this, and future pandemics; saving lives around the world.
The COVID-19 Genomics UK Consortium includes the NHS, public health agencies, Wellcome Sanger Institute, and numerous academic institutions including the University of Sheffield. Expert groups across the country will work together to rapidly analyse the genetic code of coronavirus samples circulating in the UK. In doing so, the consortium will provide unique cutting-edge intelligence about the cause of the disease to share with public health agencies, hospitals, regional NHS centres and the government to help combat the virus. Read more.

The majority of university staff are now working remotely in line with government guidance. Our preferred method of contact for any questions or queries about your students is via email.
Please note that the University will be closed from 9 - 14 April inclusive for the Easter vacation.
