We wanted to give you some final information in the week leading up to the start of the remote exam period. We know that many of you will be starting exams next week and want to try to summarise the most important information for you.

Timetable

You will all have received your timetable by now. Please double check the dates and times of your exams and make a note of them. If you are unsure about anything, please check with somassessment@swansea.ac.uk

What do I do if I have IT problems (poor Internet, no PC etc)?

How and when will I get my exam paper?

我在什么时候、如何拿到考卷?？

• All exams will open at 09:15 BST on the day of your exam.

• At 09:15 BST you will receive an email which will be sent to your University and personal email addresses. This email will have the exam paper attached and will contain instructions on how to complete the exam.

• The email will also contain a copy of the student declaration. It is vital that you include this as page one of your exam submission as we need this to ensure the work is your own.

• The email will also contain a link to the submission point in Canvas – remember, all remote exams will be submitted to Canvas rather than Blackboard.

• If you click on the link, you will be taken to the right place on Canvas where your completed exam will need to be submitted. The exam paper will also be saved there for you.

Note: if you try to access the exam papers now, you won’t be able to as they will only be available on the timetabled day of the exam.

How long do I have for the exam? 

You will have a 24 hour window to complete your exam. However, the recommendation is that you spend 2-3 hours on each one. The 24 hour window is to ensure we are catering for different time zones and technological issues.

Students with extra time allocated will have received advice about this separately.

How much do I need to write?

The recommended word limit is 2000 words for a 2 hour exam with 3000 words as a maximum word limit. There is no minimum word limit. It is important you don’t write more than this as lecturers will not be able to mark beyond the word limit.

How do I submit my completed exam?

We have attached a guide to submission to Canvas – please read this carefully and ask if you are unsure.

What happens if I have difficulties submitting to Canvas?

You must email somsubmit@swansea.ac.uk straight away, attaching your completed exam at the

same time.

Can I use books and other materials?

Yes but you need to ensure that you read the advice on academic misconduct in the attached guide very carefully. Reference lists do not need to be provided with remote exam submissions but you do need to include in text citations as you would in an in-person exam.

Extenuating circumstances

If you are affected by any situation, such as illness or personal circumstances, which impacts on your capacity to complete an assessment to the best of your ability, you can use it as grounds to apply to defer an exam or assignment.  The University has updated its policy and guidance on this - please read the Covid-19 updated guidance at the start of the policy via the following link: https://myuni.swansea.ac.uk/academic-life/academic-regulations/aqs-policies/policy-on-extenuating-circumstances/

If your circumstances mean that you are unable to sit one or more exams or assessments during the upcoming assessment period, or you feel that your performance was affected during the exam, you should contact the SoM Assessment as soon as possible.  We would strongly encourage students to do this before an exam if possible, and up to a maximum of 5 days after the submission date of the remote assessment.  Requests submitted after this time limit will not be considered.
