地理专业是美国研究生申请中一个比较小众的专业，但是每年依然有不少学生会选择申请，比如研究环境、研究气候、以及一些灾难的研究方向。今天老师 就用佛罗里达大学的地理学院开设的专业为例，给大家介绍一下地理系的专业开设情况。

首先，在佛罗里达大学的地理系中，有以下7个研究方向：

涉猎范围广泛，地球科学系统和可持续发展都是比较热门的研究方向。

The Department of Geography offers a breadth of degree options and coursework to prepare students for diverse careers that utilize geospatial sciences. Work and learn alongside faculty and mentors who conduct exciting, world-renowned research in the department’s four focus areas: GeoSpatial Analysis and Techniques, Medical Geography in Global Health, Earth System Science, and Global Environmental and Social Change. The research conducted by our graduate students is broad and interdisciplinary, touching on topics around the globe including land cover and climate change, deforestation and land conflicts, catastrophic weather events, river restoration, healthcare accessibility, and emerging infectious diseases.

Geographers can choose to study an enormous range of subjects in the geospatial sciences, essentially anything that has a spatial component. Students who major in geography use the lens of space to examine issues as diverse as climate variability and change on the African continent, malaria outbreaks in Africa and South America, deforestation and land conflict in the Amazon, and the origin and spread of blues music in the Southeastern United States. Across the globe, geographers study tropical cyclones, river restoration, disease outbreaks, the role of parks and other protected areas, changes in land cover, forest management and fragmentation, community conservation, emerging infectious diseases, environmental influences on the elderly, and economic development.

Geography explores the relationship between human and biophysical systems and deals with some of the most critical issues of our time such as environmental hazards, conservation, sustainability of resource management systems, international development, and community and urban planning. Understanding the concept of place, including how and why places differ from each other, is a central concern. Students who have social and economic interests can enter into careers in international development, urban and regional planning, geographic information systems, and environmental consultancy. Students who combine the study of socioeconomic factors and the biophysical world can work in resource management, conservation, environmental assessment, and watershed and coastal planning.

学院里开设硕士学位和博士学位，都非常欢迎大家申请，博士申请记得最好提前联系导师，而且今年还免除了GRE的申请要求。同学们只要提供一下申请材料即可申请：

Step 1. Read our Before You Apply Page. Geography cannot help you to change your materials once you’ve submitted – please don’t ask.

Step 2. Have all materials ready. Navigate to the UF Graduate Admissions page and follow their instructions. Once you submit your application, you may not be able to add additional materials. Please do not contact us to do so as Geography can only view, not edit, your application materials.

Step 3. Follow the instructions on the website, being sure to upload your Statement of Purpose, CV, application for funding, documentation of funding you have secured if any, and request your recommendation letters to be sent electronically. You can also upload unoffical scanned copies of transcripts in lieu of sending them to Geography.  Once complete, the Department of Geography will have access to the materials you have uploaded there. You must send originals to the admissions office. Please do not email these items to the Department unless you are an internal applicant who cannot apply through the Admissions Office website. Important note: be sure to indicate Geography as your intended major program (you can apply for up to 3 programs at the same time!), and your specialization (e.g., climatology, economic geography, geomorphology, medical geography, remote sensing, etc.). List as the contact person the professor with whom you’ve been corresponding.

Step 4. Have your official transcripts sent to the University Office of Admissions. International students need to have them in their native language and English and will also need to provide separate certification that their degree has been awarded – native language and English. Only proof of a bachelor’s degree is required for admission. However, PhD applicants should send transcripts of their master’s degree coursework even if it is in progress so that we can evaluate the coursework you have completed. Admissions will require your completed Master’s transcripts within your first semester here at UF.
