Should You Attend an Urban or a Rural School?

择校攻略：你该选择城市学校还是乡村学校？

One of the major axes to consider as you evaluate colleges is the density of the school's environment. As with many other ways of typing universities - by size, research or teaching focus, by public or private funding - there's no right answer in abstraction, but there may be a right answer for you. Let's break down some of the differences.

你评估学校时考虑的主要因素之一是学校环境的密集程度。有很多其他方法将学校归类，按照规模，科研或者教学重点归类，又或者按照政府资助或自费归类。抽象意义上讲没有绝对正确的选择，但一定会有一个合适你的学校。让我们分析一下它们的不同之处。

An urban school brings with it all the advantages and disadvantages of city-living. That often means:

Better public transit systems and easier access to transit hubs like airports and train stations

Reliable connections to the arts

An abundance of nightlife and cultural activities

More diverse employment opportunities during school

A higher density of potential post-school employers nearby

在城市生活方面，城市学校既有优势也有不利之处。那常常意味着：

更好的公共交通运输，去交通枢纽站如机场和火车站更加便捷

与人文活动更可靠的联系

学校里更多不同的就业机会

周边更密集的未来雇主

But city living can also have its downsides, like crowds, generally higher crime rates, less access to the great outdoors, and often a higher cost of living.

但是城市生活也有它的劣势，像拥挤, 相对更高的犯罪率，户外运动少和更高的生活成本。

On the flipside, rural living has its own perks:

Wide-open spaces and access to nature

More available outdoorsy activities

A small town ethos, which may be more casual and relaxed

Less air and light pollution

乡村生活同样有它的优势：

广阔的空间，贴近大自然

更多户外活动

小镇风情，更随意自在

空气和光污染少

... and disadvantages, most of which boil down to lower population density making it harder for a town to support the arts and infrastructure of a large city.

缺点是：由于人口较为稀疏，一个小镇很难支持大城市的人文和基础建设。

It's also worth noting that, as elsewhere, rural areas in the United States tend to be somewhat more religious and politically conservative than cities - though student bodies are generally less religious more politically liberal than their surrounding populations.

值得一提的是，美国的乡村地区有更浓郁的宗教氛围，相对于城市来说在政治方面更为保守。尽管学生群体大体上较周边的人口来说不那么宗教化，政治思想更自由。

There are great educations to be had at schools in all environments. The important question is one of self-knowledge: what surroundings will make you the happiest, healthiest student you can be?

不论哪种环境，学校提供的教育都是好的。重要的是清楚的认识自我：哪种环境能让你最开心，最健康？
