Part 1

    2021-05-31

"Don't tell me the moon is shining; show me the glint of light on broken glass." – Anton Chekhov

As teachers, we often tell students to “show, don't tell.” Unfortunately this phrase has become so used that it no longer has any meaning. Students are told this, but still have difficulty understanding what it means. Learning how to show is one of the most difficult – and important – parts of writing application essays.

What does Show Don't Tell mean?

"Show Don't Tell" describes writing in various forms with an emphasis on using and showing actions in order to convey the emotions you want readers to interpret, which creates a better experience for readers, instead of writing exposition to tell what happened.

By showing the actions and relationships and feelings instead of just telling the reader what happened, the writing comes off deeper and more meaningful. This creates a deeper connection and brings readers closer to you. Show don't tell refers to the way in which you describe the experience you went through.

    Example 1:

Tell: "I was afraid of the dark."

Show: "As my mom switched off the light and left the room, I began huddling under the covers, gripping the sheets, and holding my breath as the wind blew open the window."

Here, I've put myself in a situation where my experience of being afraid of the dark takes center stage.

    Example 2 :

Tell: "She was my best friend. I could tell her almost anything."

Show: “I met her at the town square, running in for our usual long bear-hug as we gushed about our lives with smiles lighting our faces.”

The example of “telling” is shorter, but it doesn't do a great job of really showing the relationship. This isn't just any friend; it's my best friend. Showing the relationship is vital to forging that deeper connection.

The entire point of showing versus telling in writing is to make a stronger emotional connection with your readers and hook them. The idea behind this writing technique is to put the reader in your shoes. Make them feel, hear, and sense the situation as you did. It's about creating an experience for the reader instead of just a recount of events. Doing this makes the reader want to root for you and become invested.

A person's actions are really an opening to their mind and how they feel.

In my next blog, I will provide 3 tips to Show Don't Tell in your writing.
