Chinese mathematician Wang Hong has been awarded the 2025 Salem Prize, a prestigious award often regarded as a precursor to the Fields Medal, the highest honor in mathematics.
This recognition comes swiftly on the heels of another major achievement, as just a day earlier, on Monday, Wang received the ICCM Gold Medal of Mathematics, an award often hailed as the "Fields Medal for Chinese mathematicians".
据统计，从1968年到2024年的56位塞勒姆奖获奖者中诞生了10位菲尔兹奖得主。该奖每4年颁发1次，每次授予2至4名有卓越贡献的数学家。
截至2022年，世界上共有65位数学家获得菲尔兹奖，其中2位为华裔数学家，分别是1982年获奖的数学家丘成桐和2006年获奖的数学家陶哲轩。
The Salem Prize, awarded every four years to two to four mathematicians for outstanding contributions, has a notable history of predicting future Fields Medalists. Statistics show that from 1968 to 2024, 10 of the 56 Salem Prize recipients have gone on to win the Fields Medal. Globally, as of 2022, only 65 mathematicians have been awarded the Fields Medal, including two mathematicians of Chinese descent: Shing-Tung Yau in 1982 and Terence Tao in 2006.
王虹是一名“90后”数学教授，出生于广西桂林市平乐县沙子镇。她从小就展现出过人的聪慧和对知识的渴望。
在父母的引导下，她在5岁时就掌握了一年级的知识，并因此直接跳级进入小学二年级。2007年，年仅16岁的她以优异的成绩考入北京大学地球与空间科学学院学习，后转系至数学科学学院，2011年获北京大学数学学士学位；2014年获巴黎综合理工学院工程师学位和巴黎第十一大学硕士学位，2019年获麻省理工学院博士学位。
Born in 1990 in Shazi town, Guilin city, Guangxi Zhuang autonomous region, Wang from a young age has displayed exceptional academic talent. She mastered first-grade material by the age of five, resulting in her being directly admitted into second grade directly and skipping the first year entirely. In 2007, at the age of 16, she was admitted to Peking University's School of Earth and Space Sciences. She later transferred to the School of Mathematical Sciences, earning her bachelor's degree in 2011.
博士毕业后，王虹于2021年6月完成在普林斯顿高等研究院的博士后研究工作，并于当年7月起任加州大学洛杉矶分校（UCLA）助理教授，2023年7月起任纽约大学柯朗数学研究所副教授。
作为调和分析领域的重要学者，王虹在限制猜想、局部平滑猜想等多个重要领域取得突破性成果。2022年，她荣获“玛丽安·米尔札哈尼新前沿奖”，以表彰其在该领域的卓越贡献。
今年2月，王虹与同伴宣告证明了困扰数学界上百年的经典难题“挂谷猜想”，在数学界引发轰动。
今年6月，王虹教授在北京大学开数学讲座，现场座无虚席。其中，北大数院研究员韦东奕连续多天端坐一排听讲。
