US President Donald Trump treated his time in Japan on Tuesday as a victory lap — befriending Japan's first female leader Sanae Takaichi, taking her with him as he spoke to US troops aboard an aircraft carrier and then unveiling several major energy and technology projects in America to be funded by Japan.
Trump described Takaichi as a "winner" as he spoke to thousands of US troops aboard the USS George Washington at the Yokosuka Naval Base in central Japan.
"Now, on the Japanese government's side they're really looking for one thing and that is chemistry between the two leaders. They want to see if Trump and Takaichi will be able to really develop a close, personal rapport — a close relationship to take the US-Japan alliance to new heights."
Takaichi has been accused of "taking flattery to the extreme" after she informed Trump on Tuesday about her plan to nominate him for next year's Nobel Peace Prize.
