Increasedlifeexpectancyisoneofthemostnotablehumanconsequencesofadvancesinhealthandwealthduringthelastcentury.Wearelivinglongerandourenduringqualityoflifedependsonhealthyageing.TodayNewcastlehasthelargestinterdisciplinarycentreforageingresearchinEuropeandisoneofthemostimportantglobalcontributorstothefield.OurInstituteforAgeingandHealth(IAH)isuniqueinbringingtogetherbiological,clinicalandsocialscientistswithNHSservicesforoldagemedicine,neurologyandpsychiatry.WehavemadeaninternationalimpactonthediagnosisandtreatmentofAlzheimer’sdiseaseanddementiawithLewybodies,ontheroleofmitochondrialdysfunctioninageingandage-relateddisease,andontheunderlyingbiologyoftheageingprocess.InpartnershipwithNewcastleuponTyneHospitalsNHSFoundationTrust,wehaverecentlybeenawardedDepartmentofHealthBiomedicalResearchcentrestatusinAgeing.WealsohaveacentreforBrainAgeingandVitality,supportedbyBBSRC,EPSRC,ESRCandMRC.ThequalityofourworkonageingwasrecognisedbytheawardoftheQueen’sAnniversaryPrizeforHigherandFurtherEducationin2009.
