ThisMastersdegreeprogrammecriticallydiscussesthechangingroleof'findsspecialists'andprovidestraininginthestudyandinterpretationofartefactsfromarchaeologicalsitesandmuseumcollections.Thecoursewillbelargelytaughtusingthestaff,equipmentandcollectionsattheUCLInstituteofArchaeology,butgoodusewillalsobemadeoftheexpertiseandcollectionsofanumberofothermuseumsandprofessionalarchaeologicalunits.Studentswillbeintroducedtotheskillsoffindsspecialists,practicalissuesinvolvedintheprofessionalstudyofartefactsandmajortheoreticaldebatesaboutthecollection,interpretation,reportingandcurationofarchaeologicalmaterials.Acentralconcernwilbetheintegrationoffindsanalysiswithinwiderarchaeologicalresearchquestions.Inthethirdtermstudentswillundertakeaplacementwithinamuseumoranarchaeologicalunitwhereexperiencewillbegainedinthepracticeoffindsanalysisandbodyofmaterialstudiedforthedissertation.Bytheendofthecoursestudentsshouldhaveanappreciationoftheadvantagesanddisadvantagesofdifferentapproachestoartefactstudiesandwillbeabletoundertaketheanalysisandreportingofanartefactassemblageofspecificmaterials.
