Towardstheendofthe20thcenturyitbecameapparentthattheever-increasingdemandforthetransportofpeopleandgoodscouldnotbesatisfiedbythecurrenttransportoffer,withoutcreatingsignificantenvironmentalimpactthroughnoise,atmosphericpollutionandlandtake.Railwayswererediscoveredasapotentiallysustainablesolutionformanytrafficflows,particularlywherevolumesarehigh,whilealsoofferingbenefitsintermsofspeed,safetyandreductionsincongestion.Thisprogrammeisdesignedtoprovidetheknowledge,knowhowandskillsrequiredtodesignandmanagesuccessfullythehighlyspecialisedsubsystemsandcomplexinterfacesthatcharacteriseexistingandnewrailways.Theprogrammehasastrongfocusondevelopingyourrailwayengineeringknowledge,systemintegrationskillsandyourabilitytoworkinfocusedprojectteams.Manyparticipantsareexperiencedrailwayengineersandmanagers,sponsoredbytheiremployers,buttheprogrammealsoallowsnewentrantstotherailwayindustrytofamiliarisethemselveswiththespecialistdisciplinesinvolvedinrailwaysystemsengineering,whilealsogaininganinsightintothecomplexinteractionsbetweensubsystems.ThetaughtpartoftheprogrammeinRSEIisbuiltaround8assessedmodulesof10creditseach,2researchmodulesattracting20creditseachandfoursupplementarymodulesthatarenotformallyassessed,thesameforDiplomaandMSccandidates.MScstudentsalsoundertakeanintegratingprojectthatleadstoadissertation,attracting60credits,allatMasterslevel.Themodulesareassessedindividuallytoallowflexiblestudy,includingfull-timeandpart-timeattendancebybothEuropeanandoverseas-basedstudents.Technologyorientedmodulescovertheprinciplesofrollingstockdesign,railwaytractionsystems,infrastructureandtracksystems,railwaycontrolsystems,aswellassystemsengineeringprinciples.Managementfocusedmodulescomplementtherangeofsubjectstaughtinthetechnology-orientedmodulesandincludethestrategicmanagementofrailwayoperations,railwaytechnologystrategyandeconomics,aswellasergonomicsandhumanfactors.Modulesincludelectures,tutorials,teamexercisesandindustrialvisits.TheprogrammealsofeaturesaEuropeanstudytour.
