Master of Education (Science Education), The University of Hong Kong
Programme Overview
This stream is a taught Master of Education programme offered by the Faculty of Education at the University of Hong Kong, delivered entirely in English with intake commencing each September. Students are required to complete 60 credits for graduation.
Study Mode
- Full-time: Normally 1 year, maximum registration period of 2 years
- Part-time: Normally 2 years, maximum registration period of 4 years
Programme Aims
The programme targets science teachers, STEM curriculum developers and education researchers. It focuses on secondary and primary science subjects including Physics, Chemistry and Biology. Aligned with global trends in STEM education, the curriculum covers science curriculum design, inquiry-based teaching, classroom assessment and implementation of science-related activities. It integrates local and international science teaching cases to build students’ theoretical knowledge and practical classroom skills.
Curriculum Structure
- Core compulsory modules for all MEd students: Educational foundational theories, educational research methodologies
- Specialised core modules for Science Education: Theories of science teaching and learning, science curriculum development, STEM instructional design, delivery of inquiry-based science lessons, assessment in science education
- Elective modules: Educational technology, interdisciplinary teaching, curriculum innovation and other relevant courses
- Final graduation requirement: Either a small-scale educational research project or a teaching practice portfolio
Career Paths
Graduates may work as primary or secondary science teachers, STEM curriculum developers, school science researchers, science teachers in international schools, or coordinators of youth science activities. Students may also pursue further higher degrees related to science education.
Entry Requirements
1. Academic Background
Applicants shall hold a full bachelor’s degree from recognised higher education institutions. There is no mandatory restriction on undergraduate majors, yet applicants with backgrounds in science disciplines, teacher education or science education are deemed more suitable. Relevant internships or full-time work experience in science teaching, STEM curriculum design or science research will be taken into consideration during application review. The university does not set a fixed minimum GPA standard; admission decisions are made based on holistic assessment of all submitted documents.
2. Language Proficiency (Either one, valid for two years; home-based online test versions are not accepted)
- IELTS Academic: Overall band 6.5 with no subtest below 6.0
- TOEFL iBT: Overall score of 93 or above
Applicants who completed their undergraduate studies entirely in English may submit an application for language exemption, subject to individual review by the university.
3. Required Application Documents
- Official undergraduate transcripts and degree certification documents
- Curriculum Vitae documenting relevant experience in science teaching and STEM research
- Personal Statement outlining reasons for applying, study plans and long-term career goals
- Two reference letters, which can be provided by academic supervisors or direct teaching supervisors
- Valid language proficiency test report
