The Master of Economics programme aims to introduce students to frontier developments in economics and to equip them with state-of-the-art analytical tools. It emphasises real-world relevance and applications. The discipline of economics has been developing rapidly in recent decades and has produced useful ideas and revealing empirical findings. All these are important in economic and social-policy design and evaluation, business decision-making and our understanding of economic behaviour in general. However, because of their technical nature, these latest advances are not easily accessible to laymen. The programme bridges the gap between technicality and applicability. It is most suitable for those who plan to pursue a career in which economic analytical skills play an important role.
Students must read a total of ten courses, including the completion of three core courses (on microeconomics, macroeconomics and econometrics) and a capstone course. They can choose to concentrate in one of the streams: Data Analysis Stream, Policy Analysis Stream, Theory Stream, and Advanced Research Stream, according to their interests and career aspirations. The Advanced Research Stream stresses on the cultivation of research capabilities and students with strong academic inclination would be offered real exposure to the research industry.
Up to two elective courses may be taken from other taught postgraduate programmes offered by the Faculty.
