    Programme Aims and Objectives

    The programme provides an opportunity for applied scientists and engineers to pursue an in-depth study in various aspects of materials engineering and nanotechnology. Courses in this programme may also be used to fulfil the "top up courses" requirement for joining the Materials Discipline of the Hong Kong Institution of Engineers (HKIE).

    Designed to benefit students from a broad spectrum of backgrounds, the programme aims to enable students to:

    • have extensive knowledge of and possess analytical ability in the field of materials engineering and nanotechnology;

    • have the ability to apply the knowledge of materials engineering and nanotechnology to generate creative ethical solutions in the working environment;

    • be capable of communicating effectively in materials related professions;

    • design and conduct experiments, as well as to analyze and interpret data;

    • identify, formulate, solve engineering problems and generate new ideas in materials engineering and nanotechnology; and

    • recognize the need for, and an ability to engage in life-long learning.

    Entrance Requirements

    To be eligible for admission, you must satisfy the General Entrance Requirements and the following programme specific entrance requirement:

    • have a degree in a relevant physical science or engineering discipline such as Physics, Chemistry, Civil / Electrical / Electronic / Manufacturing / Mechanical Engineering, Materials Science / Technology and Building, or equivalent.

    Persons with the following qualifications may also apply:

    • a graduate member or a non-member qualified for graduate membership of a relevant professional institution, for example, the Hong Kong Institution of Engineers (HKIE), member institutions of the Engineering Council (UK) and other relevant recognized professional institutions.

    Applicants whose entrance qualification is obtained from an institution where the medium of instruction is not English should also fulfil the following minimum English proficiency requirement:

    • a TOEFL score of 550 (paper-based test) or 59 (revised paper-delivered test) or 79 (Internet-based test) on the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL); or
    • Overall band 6.5 in International English Language Testing System (IELTS); or
    • Score 450 in the new College English Test (CET6) of Chinese mainland; or
    • Other equivalent qualifications.

    Students must complete 3 required courses (9 credit units) and 21 credit units of elective courses.

    Intermediate Awards

    For PGD award, students are required to complete three required courses and five electives from the Department of Materials Science and Engineering. For PGC award, students are required to complete three required courses and one elective from the Department. For Certificate of Completion, students have to complete all coursework, pass all examinations and with an attendance rate of at least 75% in a course offered by the Department. For Certificate of Attendance, students have to achieve an attendance rate of at least 75% in a course offered by the Department.
