With a curriculum unmatched among liberal arts colleges of its size, Swarthmore offers more than 600 courses and undergraduate research opportunities, in science, engineering, humanities, and social sciences. The College's exceptional honors program is built on the idea that engaging in dialogue is the best way to truly master material. One hallmark of the program is the small seminar-style classes in which each student has a chance to speak, as well as lead discussions. This collaborative approach fosters an environment in which students share research results, workshop papers, and continue discussions long after class meetings. Another distinctive feature is the exchange between students and external examiners who come to campus to meet with seniors, both to assess their work and enter into a dialogue about it.
