My interest in Industrial Engineering has rapidly grown from the seeds plantedin the summer of my junior year as a consultant intern at the Center of QuickResponse Manufacturing. l found myself especially drawn to the combination oftheory and practice in the work. During my internship, I was captivated by themagnitude and intricacies of the manufacturing process, material handlingstrategy, and the details specified within the scheduling plans. Different from atraditional manufacturing company, Lean and Six Sigma principles areunsuitable for small businesses. Dental Crafters, the company l worked for, hadhigh-mix, low-volume criteria for each product, which required an advancedstrategy to improve the manufacturing efficiency. Through accomplishing dataanalysis, creating a process flow chart, and validating the simulation model, lprovided technical recommendations based on the data and model. The coreidea of this project that interests me so much is accommodating the generaloptimized idea to a specific company by investigating labor and equipmentutilization and incorporating new, practical solutions.
The practice process is the intermediary between academic research and the achievement of ideal manufacturing efficiency. While taking introductory manufacturing courses, I became interested in the application of manufacturing capacity optimization. Through Inspection, Quality Control and Reliability courses that I was enrolled in as a junior, I have gained an understanding of how products are inspected under standard requirements, how to achieve maximum manufacturing efficiency, and how to manage inventory levels to avoid waste. These skills, which I have honed over the past few years, lay a solid foundation for future study. Because analytical research is my most well-developed academic strength, as evidenced by reference letters, the MS Industrial Engineering program is an ideal launch point for a research career in academia. Eventually, I want to build a focused manufacturing industry network where I can help employees, government, and social enterprises understand and address wicked problems at the intersection of manufacturing and management. The skills I aim to acquire through this graduate training are crucial to the evolution of my practice.
