Current LL.M. (Masters of Laws) students are not eligible to transfer to the J.D. program at HLS. Current and former LL.M. students interested in applying for the J.D. program at HLS should instead apply through the regular J.D. application pathway.

Q:Is it possible to transfer into the JD or SJD program from the LLM program?
A:LLM students are welcome to apply for transfer to the JD program but are not guaranteed admission. Only current Penn Carey Law LLMs may apply to transfer into our JD program and the LSAT is not required. We do not accept LLM alumni or LLM students from other law schools as transfer students into our JD program.
Penn Carey Law students are also welcome to apply to the SJD program. Although we provide guidance and support to those students, admission to the SJD program is very competitive.

Transfer Credits
Transfer applicants must have accrued between 28 and 32 credits from law schools that belong to the American Association of Law Schools (AALS) or have been approved by the section on Legal Education of the American Bar Association. If you have fewer than 28 or more than 32 credits, please include a written explanation as an addendum to your application.
After you have transferred to the Law School, the director of academic counseling will review your credits and determine how many will count toward the core first-year curriculum as well as the J.D. degree.
In order to obtain the J.D. degree, you must:
Earn at least 83 total academic points
Take at least 51 points at Columbia Law School (if you completed your first year of law school elsewhere in the United States)
Complete four terms of full-time residency in the J.D. program
The Law School does not award credit for:
Summer school courses
Non-law courses
Courses in which you received a grade lower than C
Courses graded on a pass/fail system
Subject to ABA Standard 505(d), transfer applicants seeking to apply credit from LL.M. or other post-J.D. programs at law schools other than Columbia, including international law schools, must apply as first-year students.

Current UCLA LL.M. students are allowed to apply to the J.D. Program as transfer students during the transfer application period (early May through early July of each year). The Law School Admission Test (LSAT) is not required. The applicant’s grades and the relative difficulty of coursework pursued in the LL.M. Program at UCLA will be weighed heavily. The admissions process is extremely selective (more selective than the LL.M. Program). Students with very high grades and strong English language skills (including demonstrated ability to communicate sophisticated legal concepts in English-speaking legal environments) will be the most competitive. Letters of reference from UCLA School of Law faculty will also carry significant weight.
