Due to recent event and travel restrictions caused by the Coronavirus, American University understands that this may have created challenges for our applicants to meet application requirements and deadlines. As such, we have made some modifications to our process and timelines.
We understand that English language proficiency testing may be difficult or impossible in your area at this time. As such, we are temporarily accepting Duolingo in lieu of a TOEFL or IELTS score as part of our admissions process. For direct entry to our programs, the minimum required Duolingo score is a 120.
For our programs that are eligible for our language accelerator programs, the score range is from 100-115. These programs are our MS in finance, MS in real estate, MS in taxation, and MS in accounting.
As this is a recent and temporary adjustment to our admissions policies and procedures, you will not see Duolingo listed as an option in our online application. Please email admissions directly at kogodgrad@american.edu to indicate that you will be submitting a Duolingo score, and we will manage that on our end of the application portal.
We want to remind you that (other than our MS in finance) our programs are test optional for the GMAT or GRE exams. While you are encouraged to submit a score if you have one, you are not required to do so. If you are unable to schedule a GMAT or GRE exam at this time, please complete our supplemental essay. For our MS in finance, we offer GMAT or GRE waivers for students who meet our criteria. The supplemental essay prompt and waiver criteria can be found in our application guide.
Lastly, our published deadline for students requiring visa sponsorship by American University is March 15. If you are currently impacted by the COVID-19 restrictions, we will be extending your application deadline until May 1, 2020. We ask that you complete your application, with all supplemental documents by that date, May 1, 2020.
