1914年， Alfred P. Sloan School of Management开始于麻省理工学院经济与统计系（the Department of Economics and Statistics）的工程管理部门（Engineering Administration）的 Course XV。
1917年，Erwin Haskell Schell 是第一位聘请的商业管理（Business Management faculty ）教员，被公认为Course XV的第一任负责人。
1925 年，设立了管理学硕士学位课程（a master’s degree in management）。
1930年Course XV 成为一个独立的专业体系，并被命名为工商管理系（the Department of Business and Engineering Administration）。

1951年，Edward Pennell Brooks（1917 级）成为新 SIM 的第一任院长
