Core Courses
MAAL6002 Second language curricula
This course examines the cycle of curriculum design and renewal in English language programmes
with particular emphasis on their theoretical basis and practical implementation with reference to se
condary and tertiary contexts.
MAAL6027 Discourse analysis
This course introduces participants to a range of approaches to the analysis of written and spoken di
scourse. These include conversation analysis, corpus linguistics, functional linguistics and critical d
iscourse analysis. It also explores key concepts for understanding texts such as genre and register, s
peech functions, repair, turn taking and negotiation of meaning.
MAAL6028 Introduction to research methods
This course provides an overview of key methods for researching applied linguistics. At the end of
the course, participants will be able to identify, describe and evaluate the relevance of research met
hods.
MAAL6029 Second language acquisition
This course provides an overview of key approaches and current trends of second language acquisit
ion (SLA). By the end of the course, participants will have a clear understanding of the relationship
among different SLA theories, as well as the methodology/techniques used in collecting second lan
guage data.
MAAL6030 Understanding language through grammar
This course adopts a functional view of grammar to understand language as a stratified system. At t
he end of the course, participants will be able to identify and describe the language use and function
in some common genres, apply relevant grammatical categories to critically analyse and interpret la
nguage data and diagnose problems of language learners.
Elective Courses
The followings are the elective courses. Note that whether an elective course will be offered in a pa
rticular year depends on student enrollment and staff availability.
MAAL6014 Language testing and assessment
This course introduces the fundamental principles of language testing and explores the design, triall
ing, moderation, validation and evaluation of testing instruments.
MAAL 6018 Vocabulary teaching and learning
This elective course introduces latest research and theory on vocabulary teaching and learning with
the aim of critically reviewing pedagogy for teachers and learners alike. Some key topics include g
oals of vocabulary acquisition, dimensions of morphological/lexical/collocational knowledge, teach
ing and learning strategies in general and specialized domains, dictionaries and contexts, testing, co
rpora and computer-assisted vocabulary learning. The course provides ways of assessing learners’
word power and reviews on-line approaches to vocabulary teaching aids such as the use of corpora
and autonomous lexical development.
MAAL6023 Advances in writing pedagogy
This course will bring candidates up to date with developments in writing pedagogy. It reviews theo
retical and practical developments that have influenced the teaching of writing in recent years and l
ooks in particular at process, genre and critical approaches to writing and discourse studies.
MAAL6031 Technology in language teaching and learning
This course prepares teachers to use technology effectively in their professional practice. It explore
s some of the key issues in current uses of technology in language teaching and learning. It looks in
particular at concepts of Computer-Assisted Language Learning, network-based teaching and learni
ng, and electronic literacy. Topics such as online interaction, multiliteracies, autonomy and technol
ogical change, and teacher professional development will be addressed. It discusses the use of vario
us resources, materials and activities in enhancing teaching and learning. It examines the use of tec
hnology from pedagogical and socio-cultural perspectives particularly with reference to language e
ducation.
MAAL6034 Gender and language
This course explores the role of gender as a sociolinguistic variable in female and male speech and
examines the major theoretical approaches to the analysis of the differences between female and ma
le speech behavior. By the end of the course, participants will be able to identify the linguistic featu
res associated with gender-specific speech.
MAAL6035 Language teacher development
This course aims to engage participants in exploring how teachers of English as a second/foreign la
nguage pursue professional development. Topics include: expertise of effective language teachers, t
eacher language awareness, teachers’ beliefs and practices, teacher learning and teacher research, re
flective practitioners, and teacher autonomy.
MAAL7002 Applied linguistics in the workplace
In the contemporary workplace, communication is not only concerned with language-in-use but em
braces a range of associated social issues. This course introduces to participants key aspects of wor
kplace communication and organizational interactions that are pertinent to applied linguists, such as
rapport management, identities, roles, and interactional strategies. These aspects will be contextuali
zed within a range of professional contexts and relevant discourse data will be provided for analysis
with reference to frameworks such as communities of practice, critical discourse analysis and intera
ctional sociolinguistics.
MAAL7003 Understanding intercultural communication
This course introduces and outlines different approaches to the key sociolinguistic notions of ‘interc
ultural communication’ and ‘intercultural communicative competence’. Via the exploration of thes
e concepts, the course equips students with the analytical competence required for the evaluation o
f effective language use as determined by the social-cultural context in which the language user is in
volved, and asks students to reflect on the importance of intercultural communicative competence f
or pedagogical purposes.
MAAL7004 Instructed second language acquisition
This course introduces students to a wide range of issues related to Instructed Second Language Ac
quisition (ISLA). It discusses key issues and questions in language acquisition that have driven the
bulk of L2 research and theorizing. While the course will cover theoretical and methodological iss
ues of ISLA research, particular attention will be paid to the link between research findings and ped
agogy – how teachers can use empirical evidence of ISLA and Second Language Acquisition (SL
A) research in their classrooms.
Capstone: Dissertation option
MAAL6037 Advanced Research Methods
This course consists of a series of interactive workshops which will focus on the skills needed to en
ter into the research phase leading to the production of a dissertation. By the end of the workshops,
candidates will be able to design and carry out their own research plan. As a result, they will be rea
dy to prepare their dissertation research proposal.
MAAL8999 Dissertation
Participants are required to complete a dissertation on an approved topic of about 15,000 words (pl
us or minus 10%). The dissertation will involve the collection and analysis of original data.
Capstone: Portfolio option
The portfolio, to be completed during the second semester (for full-time students) or the fourth sem
ester (for part-time students), provides students with an opportunity to synthesize, evaluate and refl
ect on the ways in which the core and elective courses contribute to their understanding of a specifi
c issue/topic in Applied Linguistics or the profession.
Students are required to revise at least two assignments from different courses, write a mission state
ment and a personal reflection under the guidance of an assigned supervisor who provides advice o
n the process of producing the portfolio. They are expected to spend much of their time on indepen
dent writing and write a portfolio of no more than 12,500 words.
Students take an extra elective (see list of elective courses) and do not take MAAL6037 Advanced
Research Methods.
