可以同时申请硕士和博士项目吗？
美国的硕士教育，通常分为职业类型和研究类型。
硕士教育
应用学科一般职业类型硕士项目开设较多，甚至有些新设置的项目，如近几年兴起的商业分析就完全是为了应对大数据时代对职场精通数据分析和商业技能的人才而设置的职业类型项目。
而加州伯克利大学EECS项目分为职业型硕士和研究型硕士的项目，这里给大家举例来说明这两者的区别。
Master of Engineering（MEng）项目是职业类型，培养目标是就业导向，培养学生各种技术知识和技能，为工业界输送人才。
课程类型非常偏实践，注重实用性。通常为1年-1.5年项目，也有些项目只有9个月左右的实践。通常，上课为主，学校会为学生提供更多实践和实习机会，毕业以后直接找工作。
Master of Engineering (M.Eng.)
The Master of Engineering is designed for students who plan tojoin the engineering profession following graduation. Thisaccelerated program is designed to develop professionalengineering leaders of the future who understand the technical, economic, and social issues of technology.
另外一个项目Master of Science (MS)则是研究类型，项目时长通常为2年。
MS通常可以视为就读Ph.D.的铺垫，学习的内容更加偏理论和研究方法，和做research相关的课程更多。
另外MS通常带有thesis，会给学生匹配适合的学术导师，做一个研究项目，完成论文，为Ph.D.的申请增强竞争力。当然这类项目毕业的同学，也适合企业的研发部门偏向研究的岗位。

The Master of Science (M.S.) Only program is a very small research programfor exceptional applicants with research experience. The M.S. leads to a Ph.D.or a career in industrial R&D. If you're sure that you want to continue on for aBerkeley Ph.D., you should consider applying to the MS/PhD program, sincewe admit so few people for the M.S. only, and you'll have to apply again toadd the Ph.D.
lf you are planning to immediately join the engineering profession withoutpursuing a Ph.D., the Master of Engineering.
Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) 项目的培养通常时间较长，美国一般为5-6年左右（从本科开始），或3-5年（从硕士开始），注重研究和教学技能的培养，一般基础性学科，如物理、化学、生物学、数学等博士项目较多，甚至有些专业只有博士没有硕士项目。
一般前两年会上相关的学术准备课程，第二年结束需要通过博士资格考试，才有正式读博士的资格。后面几年在教授的指导下，完成科研论文，最后通过答辩，获得博士Ph.D.学位。

A Ph.D. in EECS combines coursework and original research with exceptionafaculty mentoring to prepare students for a career in academia or industry.
The EECS Department offers two types of Ph.D. degrees (EE and CS). Theprincipal requirements for the Ph.D. are:
1. coursework (a major field and two minor fields)
2. departmental preliminary requirement (an oral exam and breadthcourses, which are different for EE and CS)
3. the qualifying exam
4. the dissertation
应该如何选择？
首先，如果本科阶段已经将自己未来职业目标思考的非常清晰的同学，推荐按照自己的职业目标来选择最适合自己的项目。
比如希望去工业界发展的同学，建议仔细研究心仪岗位的招聘要求和研究生项目的相关介绍，选择适合自己的硕士项目申请。
而本科阶段进入实验室，有比较丰富的研究经历，并且确定学术界为自己职业目标的同学，建议申请博士项目。
当然，博士项目申请竞争激烈，一个项目通常每年招生几人到十几人，学校将投入非常多的经费和师资力量对博士生进行严苛培养，经过5-6年系统性的训练，学生最终获得博士学位，学位含金量也非常高。
如果自己的本科成绩，标准化成绩，或者科研水平不够高，也可以先申请MS学位项目，在就读MS阶段达到良好的GPA，继续积累科研经历再申请Ph.D.学位，达到“曲线救国”的目的。
如果不知道自己适合走职业道路还是做学术研究，建议先申请硕士项目。
