Year 1
Psychology
There is a strong emphasis on research methods and statistical analysis throughout this programme. You will:
l be trained in basic concepts in research methods and statistics
l learn how to programme in the R language
l have a practical introduction to laboratory-based psychology research
Through lectures and tutorials, you will complete a general introduction to psychology, covering:
l cognitive psychology
l developmental psychology
l the psychology of memory and perception
l individual differences
l language and thinking
l social psychology
It is also strongly recommended that you take the Data Analysis for Psychology in R1 course. This course provides the foundations for working with:
l data
l probability
l hypothesis testing
l the R statistical programming environment
Business
You will take two business courses:
l Global Challenges for Business
l The Business of Edinburgh
These courses will introduce key concepts of management and business, including:
l strategy
l finance
l marketing
l the management of people
Through lectures, tutorials and assignments, you will learn how to apply concepts of social science to business.
We also recommend that you take Accounting for Business 1 and/or optional courses in Business such as:
l Psychological Well-being in Business
l Thinking About Business
l Planning for a Start-Up
l Fundamentals of Programming for Business Applications
Year 2
Psychology
To prepare you for Year 3, you will complete a year-long, intensive grounding in:
l research methods
l statistics
l R programming
You will continue to study core areas of psychology, developing an integrated understanding of topics such as:
l individual differences
l abnormal, developmental and social psychology
l perception
l cognitive neuroscience
l language
l memory/learning
You will practise and develop your professional and study skills, such as:
l reviewing scientific literature
l report writing
l ethical awareness
Business
You will choose three optional courses from a range of disciplines, such as:
l finance
l marketing
l innovation and entrepreneurship
l organisation studies
l international business
l business analytics
l understanding and delivering public services
l human resource management
l business economics
l business simulation
Year 3
Psychology
You will choose advanced courses in psychology. These will expand upon and combine the core areas required for British Psychological Society (BPS) accreditation.
To support your research work, you will complete further specialist courses in research methods and statistics, which you will conduct using R.
Business
In business, you will take courses in:
l Strategic Management
l Research in Management
You will also choose two specialist Honours courses in business. These will build on the knowledge and skills you gained in Year 2, for example:
l global business
l finance
l marketing
l innovation and entrepreneurship
l business economics
l human resource management
l business analytics
Year 4
You will complete an honours dissertation in either psychology or business.
You will continue to choose advanced option courses according to your interests. These courses are research-led and will allow you to learn about cutting edge topics across the range of psychology sub-disciplines.
