My journey through Broadcasting and Hosting Arts has shown me that media is more than just a tool for communication—it shapes cultural identities, public discourse, and social norms in powerful and complex ways. Although I initially focused on performance and media production, working on various projects and research tasks revealed a deeper curiosity: how media not only reflects but actively transforms society. I’ve grown increasingly interested in how cultural narratives are framed and sustained through different media formats, and more importantly, how these transformations can be critically analyzed. 

One of the most pivotal moments during my undergraduate studies was leading a research project on the rise of short dramas on Douyin (Chinese TikTok). While I began by focusing on the entertainment aspects of short-form media, the project soon evolved into a broader inquiry into how digital platforms shape audience behavior and influence social trends. Designing and conducting surveys, collecting data, and compiling the findings in both Chinese and English made me realize the importance of rigorous research in understanding media’s impact. This experience not only refined my analytical skills but also shifted my perspective—media is not just about stories; it is about how those stories are delivered and interpreted in a changing cultural landscape.

Through the Media, Culture & Society MSc, I hope to gain a deeper understanding of how media shapes public discourse and cultural identity. Learning empirical research methods will allow me to approach media studies with academic rigor, while engaging with contemporary cultural debates will sharpen my critical thinking. I am particularly excited by the independent research project component, which will allow me to pursue a topic I am passionate about—such as how media can preserve or reshape cultural memory in the digital age. 

After completing the program, I plan to pursue a career in media research or cultural policy, working on projects that examine how media narratives influence societal development. I am especially interested in contributing to initiatives that explore media’s role in national identity formation and cross-cultural understanding. Ultimately, I hope to bridge traditional media studies with digital tools and research methodologies, enabling me to work on projects that ensure cultural narratives are documented and accessible for future generations.
