地球物理学学习贯穿了数学、物理学、计算机与电子信息技术、地球科学等领域的内容。其中数学包括高等数学、线性代数、概率论与数理统计、数学物理方法、计算方法等课程；物理学中力、热、光、电也是一个不少，甚至还有原子物理学、普通物理实验等内容；计算机与电子信息技术则涵盖了计算机原理、语言与程序设计、模拟电路、数字电路、数字信号处理等课程；地球科学基础主要有地球系统科学概论、普通地质学、地球物理学概论等内容。
总的来说，物理和计算机的难度和深度几可与物理学院或者计算机学院相提并论，因此学生不但要具备扎实的数理基础，还要熟练掌握计算机的操作方法。此外，地球物理学还要学习地震学、地磁学与古地磁学、地电学、地震勘探与测井等众多本学科的专业课程。如果你成为了一个地球物理系的优等生，你几乎可以在数学系、物理系、计算机系、地质系都吃得开。换言之，如果要学好地球物理学，就必须同时学好数学、物理、计算机和地质学。
具体来说，地球物理学有以下几个就业方向，但一般都有较高的学历要求：
科研方向：可以就职于科研院所、大学院校或者地质调查局、海洋局等单位，运用各种地球物理方法从事地质研究；
预测方向：主要是进入地震局等相关单位，运用各种地球物理观测手段，结合震源运动学等知识，进行城市灾害预警研究，以及减灾、救援等技术和方法研究；
资源勘查方向：包括进入煤田、油田、矿井性质的国有大中型企业从事相关技术性工作，寻找各种矿产资源，比如中石油、中石化、中国海洋石油等；
工程探测方向：通过地球物理方法，评价工程岩土体的稳定性及环境效应，确保工程选址正确，能够正常运行，并促进工程建设与环境保护的协调；
对应软件方向：进入环保、地质、冶金等行业从事地球物理软件程序的设计、地球物理仪器的开发等工作，这正得益于地球物理学对计算机能力的高要求。
总结：
地球物理学未来可以从事科研、预测、资源勘查、工程探测以及对应软件的开发等方向的工作，但都对学历有较高要求，而且环境不失艰苦，因而需要心性和能力都契合的人才。
那么在英国，有哪些开设有地球物理硕士专业的学校可以值得推荐呢？
1）伦敦大学学院：Geophysical Hazards MSc
录取要求：Normally a minimum of an upper second-class Bachelor's degree in a relevant discipline from a UK university or an overseas qualification of an equivalent standard. Applicants whose qualifications are of a lower standard may be admitted if evidence of an adequate academic background and appropriate field experience can be shown.
2）利兹大学：Exploration Geophysics MSc
录取要求：A bachelor's degree with a 2:1 (hons) in geosciences (e.g. geology or geophysics) or in a relevant numerate subject, such as physics, mathematics, or some engineering or computing disciplines. Relevant and extensive industry experience can also be taken into account.
You must have mathematics to a good A-level grade (or equivalent) as a minimum. Your mathematical competence will be assessed prior to joining and additional training may be required. The course is computer-intensive and we assume you have basic computer literacy, including Windows and MS Office. EDCL/ICDL qualifications are not formally required, but represent the level expected. Familiarity with Linux would also be advantageous, as it forms the platform for much of the workstation-based training.
Applicants with a 2.2 will be considered on a case-by-case basis where applicants can demonstrate relevant work experience or aptitude in a relevant specialist field. Graduates from other disciplines and those with professional experience in the sector will also be considered.
2）阿伯丁大学：Geophysics MSc
Mathematics or Physics degree at 2:1 (upper second class) UK Honours level (or an Honours degree from a non-UK institution which is judged by the University to be of equivalent worth).
Those with a 2:1 in Geology, Engineering Geology, Environmental Science or similar degree will also be considered where the applicant can demonstrate proven ability in Geophysics, Mathematics and/or Physics. Key subjects you should have covered: At least one University-level Mathematics and/or Physics and/or Geophysics module.
