In his book Travels With Henry, veteran US journalist Richard Valeriani describes a scene in which Henry Kissinger, the national security advisor and later secretary of state to President Richard Nixon, walked in on an elaborate State Department meeting. Valeriani writes, "He would invariably ask, ‘Who are all these people?’ And then he would point out with some disdain, ‘I opened up China with five people.’"
At the dawn on July 9, 1971, Kissinger was sitting with three other Americans on a Pakistani plane as it skirted the planet’s second-tallest peak before entering Chinese airspace in what’s known as Kissinger’s secret visit.
Part of the ruse to keep the visit truly secret was faking an upset stomach. On the last leg of a publicly-announced trip that included Vietnam, Thailand, India and Pakistan, Kissinger and his accompanying team told the world that he had to recuperate for several days in a hill station due to a stomachache. During this time, the Pakistanis, who had been acting as a major channel of communication between the Americans and the Chinese, transported Kissinger and his four-man group to an airport in Islamabad.
However, there is a twist to that story, said Winston Lord, Kissinger’s top aide in the 70s who was with him during the trip. "Ironically, Kissinger came down with a real stomachache in India, and covered this up as much as possible because he wanted to save his real illness until he arrived in Pakistan," he said.
