      Dear Readers,

Warm greetings from Immigration Advisers New Zealand Ltd.

Over the past few weeks, Immigration New Zealand (INZ) has released several important announcements that directly affect international students, migrant workers, families, and prospective residents. These updates provide further clarity on how New Zealand intends to strengthen thestudy–to–work–to–residence pathway, while ensuring that migration settings remain aligned with the country’s labour market and economic priorities.

One of the most significant developments relates to the future direction of the Skilled Migrant Category (SMC) — New Zealand’s primary pathway to residence for skilled migrants. Immigration New Zealand has recently confirmed further details of the SMC changes that will come into effect in August 2026. These updates clarify occupation lists, introduce simplified median wage settings, and refine qualification requirements used when assessing residence eligibility. Importantly, the changes also confirm the Trades and Technician residence pathway, which will allow migrants working in specified skilled trades occupations with relevant qualifications and experience to pursue residence under clearer criteria. These reforms aim to better recognise the value of skilled workers already contributing to New Zealand’s economy and to ensure that qualifications completed in New Zealand are appropriately reflected within residence pathways.

The government’s message is clear: residence pathways will increasingly favour migrants who combine relevant qualifications with skilled employment in sectors that address genuine labour shortages.

Another major development announced recently concerns the future of post-study work pathways for international graduates. Immigration New Zealand has introduced new and updated Post-Study Work Visa (PSWV) settings, along with the creation of a Short Term Graduate Work Visa expected to launch from late 2026. This new visa will provide eligible graduates with up to six months of open work rights, allowing them time to secure employment and transition to an Accredited Employer Work Visa where appropriate.

In addition, Post-Study Work Visa eligibility will be expanded to include certain Level 7 Graduate Diploma holders, provided they also hold a bachelor’s degree. This change recognises the academic progression of many international students and strengthens the connection between postgraduate study and employment outcomes in New Zealand.

For international students considering New Zealand, these developments reinforce a critical reality: the choice of qualification must be closely aligned with future employment opportunities and long-term migration planning.

Updates have also been made within the work visa framework, particularly under the Accredited Employer Work Visa (AEWV) system. Immigration New Zealand has recognised additional occupations under the National Occupation List, allowing employers to submit Job Checks for a wider range of skilled roles. These changes help ensure that the AEWV framework continues to respond to genuine labour shortages while maintaining safeguards for local employment opportunities.

Further clarity has also been provided for open work visa holders, with new employment condition categories to be introduced in April 2026. These changes aim to improve transparency around what forms of employment are permitted and help migrants better understand their rights and responsibilities while working in New Zealand.

For families and partners of migrants, partnership-based visa applications continue to be assessed carefully, with Immigration New Zealand emphasising evidence-based evaluation of genuine and stable relationships. This reflects the broader policy direction where documentation, credibility, and compliance with visa conditions remain central to all immigration decisions.

While the last few weeks have primarily focused on student, work, and residence pathways, New Zealand continues to welcome investors and entrepreneurs who are willing to contribute to the country’s economic growth through capital investment and business activity. Investor migration pathways remain an important part of New Zealand’s broader immigration strategy.

Taken together, the recent announcements highlight a consistent policy direction: New Zealand continues to welcome genuine students, skilled professionals, families, and investors who can contribute meaningfully to the country’s economy and society. At the same time, immigration settings are becoming increasingly structured and evidence-driven, placing greater emphasis on qualifications, employment relevance, and long-term contribution.

At Immigration Advisers New Zealand Ltd, we remain committed to helping our clients understand these evolving policies and navigate their migration journey with clarity and confidence. As Licensed Immigration Advisers, we believe careful planning — particularly around education choices, employment pathways, and residence strategy — has never been more important.

We hope this newsletter helps you stay informed about the latest developments from Immigration New Zealand and their implications for migrants and international students worldwide.
