地理信息系统(Geographic Information System)，又称地理信息科学，是分析数据库管理系统和管理空间对象的信息系统，主要操作对象是地理空间数据。该学科是获取、整理、分析和管理地理空间数据的重要学科。是一门集地理学，计算机科学，遥感技术和地图学的交叉学科。
美国开设GIS的院校并不多，前三十的院校特别少，常申请的项目有：
UMICH的MS in Natural Resources and Environment：Environmental Informatics: GIS and Modeling，北卡教堂山的GIS，UCSB历来有GIS小哈佛之称，每年录取的中国本科生不超过两个； SUNY 水牛城覆盖了GIS大部分研究方向，学校汇集了很多的中国教授，博士申请难度很大，硕士相对容易进入； U Maine的GIS测中研究计算机科学，方向有空间认知和空间时态模型；以上几所院校是GIS申请者历来的申请热点。
