What do you think of the 2025 QS rankings overall?
I think something of note is that the ranking methodology is the same as last year’s. Of course, we don’t know the specifics behind this choice, but I think one reason could be that QS wants to add a sense of stability. What I mean by that is that beyond maybe wanting to observe the effects of the previous methodology change over a longer period of time, if we look at this year’s graduates, many of them probably had their high school graduations canceled by Covid and went through a lot of uncertainty, capped off by the recent events around the world. So perhaps, QS might have decided against adding in a methodology change on top of the natural shift in rankings year to year to keep things a bit more stable for these fresh graduates.
Does any particular part of the QS 2025 rankings stand out to you?
Not necessarily the 2025 rankings specifically, but overall, since we know reputation makes up 45% of a school’s ranking, it’s curious to me that, for example, Yale and Princeton rank in the 20’s. I can’t imagine that these two schools lack in reputation so, upon taking a closer look, it seems they’re losing points in the international categories that together make up 15% of the rankings. As many of the other universities in the top 20 of the QS rankings have significantly higher international student ratios and international faculty ratios, it seems the global-focused approach that QS takes does shake up the rankings from what they might otherwise be. On top of that, in Yale’s case, its research score, measured by QS using citations per faculty, is 38.6 out of 100, which seems incredibly low given that Yale is classified as having “very high research activity” by the Association of American Universities. Perhaps Yale and other schools in similar situations might be better represented by a different proxy or a combination of proxies for research activity than citations per faculty.
Any other comments about the 2025 QS rankings?
I think it’s important to note that while rankings do try to consider a wide range of factors that influence a student’s experience and future prospects, it’s very difficult to consider everything. For example, I feel that the overall environment at a school is also important to consider, but it’s yet another subjective factor for which rankings already draw criticism. I personally feel that a more challenging environment accelerates academic growth while a more active environment filled with people who’ve pursued their extracurricular passions accelerates personal growth. In essence, one’s fellow students are one of the defining elements of the college experience.
