不同学校的入学要求是各有侧重的，例如很多大学之间的一个显著差异就是招生官员对SAT成绩的考量和权重。越来越多的学校通过 test-optional 和 test-flexible 的政策弱化了SAT成绩在申请中的必要性。一所大学甚至完全不看SAT成绩！

Test Optional（自己决定是否递交）
实施Test Optional的学校意味着：学生自己决定是否要提交SAT / ACT考试成绩。换句话说，学生可以自主决定如何向学校展示自己。 例如，如果认为你的SAT成绩低于标准，你可以选择不递交你的分数，而是通过加强申请的其他部分，例如个人陈述和简历来展示自己。
实施此类政策对学校包括：
- Bates College
- Bowdoin College
- Bryn Mawr College
- The George Washington University
- Pitzer College (for students with a ≥3.5 unweighted GPA or who are in the top 10% of their high school class)
- Smith College (for US citizens/permanent residents)
- University of Chicago
- University of Iowa
- Wake Forest University
- Wesleyan University (for students attending US/Canadian high schools)
- University of Rochester（since 2020）
Test Flexible（自己决定交哪类成绩）
Test Flexible的学校与常规的test-optional 学院略有不同。在这些学校，你可以提交其他考试成绩来代替SAT / ACT成绩。可接受的分数将根据学校而有所不同，但通常可以通过提交SAT II科目考试，AP考试，IB考试和/或一些国家的升学毕业考试的分数来满足SAT / ACT要求。

"To be eligible for admission, you must submit one of the following:
- SAT (essay test not required)
- ACT (writing test not required)

- Certain international qualifications that shows you completed your secondary education."

Class Rank/GPA Substitution （学校成绩好免交）
在某些学校，只有在达到学校最低要求的GPA或班级排名时，才可以免于递交SAT / ACT分数。如果符合这些要求将被录取。但是，如果不符合这些最低要求，则必须按照惯例申请并在申请时提交SAT / ACT分数。
