Creative Inventions that Will Boost Your Resume

I often get asked this question, “I have some interests and hobbies like painting, playing the piano, Physics, Engineering, and etc. but, what can I do with them?”

I would always tell my students to take some time to sit down and think about what they are good at. And then, utilize their skills/talents to do something .

Take for example:

Almost everyone who knows me know that my No.1 interest/skill/talent is in doing nail art. Although I am not professionally trained and I do not have any work experiences in the nail art industry, I have learned nail art tricks and techniques through YouTube, some websites and Apps. So, if I were to expand my interest and put my talent into good use (in terms of contributing to the community), I could use nail art designs to raise awareness for different events and occasions.

This post IS NOT ABOUT NAIL ART only…

Nail Art is just one of the many examples I am going to share with you in this post. I am sure this article will inspire you with ideas to make your high school and college life fun and interesting.

The following are examples of some creative inventions that may spark your interest:

ART

1.Nail Art Designs that Raise Awareness

Nail Art has been used as a mean to help raise awareness. Over the years, people have painted a particular event or awareness in the form of a set of nail designs to raise awareness. This is particularly popular among women. The following image are examples of nail art awareness raised for Type 1 Diabetes, Breast Cancer, Autism, and Animal Protection.

2.Hand-painted Rock Necklaces

BrielleForCharity sold hand-painted rock necklaces to raise funds for two charities: The Ellen Wildfire Fund to help save the gorillas and to help relief efforts in Australia due to the deviation from the wildfires.

3.Optical Illusion to Discourage Running in Hallways

A UK-based company called Casa Ceramica specially designs floor that looks like it has a major dent to prevent people from running in the hallway.

4.Math Class Doormat

Students who are particularly strong in art or design can come up with a doormat in their respective classes in school to help encourage students to learn.

5.Book Lockers

Biloxi Junior High School in Biloxi, Mississippi painted their school’s lockers into books to recommend good books and to encourage reading amongst students.

6.Transforming Garbage Bins

In Delhi, India, artists are transforming garbage bins to make them aesthetically appealing!

In many other countries, trash cans are becoming street art to encourage people to use them and avoid littering. These are some ideas you too, can apply to your community and school.

Science and Technology

1.3D Printed Orthopedic Casts

Have you, your loved ones of your friends ever broke a bone? Probably yes. The medical casts you get from your doctors to support and protect your injury can be heavy, uncomfortable, inconvenient and most importantly not very hygienic.

According to Forbes, companies like CastPrint and ActivArmor now offer 3D-printed casts that are lightweight and allow users to easily shower and maintain good hygiene.

2.LEGO Prosthetic Arm

In an age of iPads, computers and Wi-Fi, the humble LEGO brick has not only endured, it has survived and thrived against all odds. One can build just about anything with the fun and colorful little bricks, and there are plenty of expansion sets to help you make anything you can dream of.

In Barcelona, a bioengineering student, David Aguilar built his own working prosthetic art – from LEGO bricks. Aguilar was born without his right forearm, due to his interest in LEGO, he was inspired to make his on prosthetic arm using LEGO bricks. This is the power of creativity and technology!

3. Wheels for Pets

How many of you feel your heart pinch when you see a paralyzed animal? They can’t speak for themselves, they can’t seek help, and they can’t buy their own wheels to assist with their mobility. Over the past decade, some kind-hearted people and pet owners have come up with unique ideas to help this group of animals. Similar to Eddie’s Wheels for Pets, many out there have built DIY wheelchairs for handicapped animals .

Tortoises can live up to over 150 years. But what happens if a tortoise is handicapped and not able to move freely? This could possibly shorten its lifespan.

A little tortoise with a metabolic bone disease was given a “wheelchair” made of LEGO skate glued to its shell so that it could skate about and live a normal life.

Paralyzed dogs of all shapes and sizes have been fitted with DIY wheels that give them the freedom to run, play, sniff and etc.

A puppy named Gracie was born without front legs. Thanks to her lifesaver, Dylan, a 12-year-old boy who volunteered at the animal shelter, Gracie now has a wheelchair built out of LEGO bricks.

Going an Extra Mile in Community Services

1.A Rubik’s Cube for The Blind

Are you a professional in solving the Rubik’s Cube? If your answer is yes, I suggest that you go an extra mile to teach others around you on how to solve the Rubik’s Cube.

Rubik’s Cube expert, Evgeny Bondarenko created unique designs using 3D printing pen on his Rubik’s Cube. Each tactile design allows the player to fully enjoy the game. Similarly, a grad student at the University of Massachusetts upgraded his Rubik’s Cube using distinctly shaped buttons, to create a Rubik’s Cube that is suitable for the blind and visually impaired.

2.Life-changing Power Wheels

A Vermont high schooler, Willem Hillier transformed a toy into a set of power wheels for a 4-year-old girl, in a high school robotics project. Another robotics team at Farmington High School in Minnesota also created a Power Wheels wheelchair for a 2-year-old toddler with physical disability.

3.Old Fridge Turned into Free Library

Before we chuck away a huge and bulky fridge, let’s think of what else this “big box” can be used for.

In many countries, like South Auckland, New Zealand, people reuse old fridges to exchange books as part of the effort to protect the environment and increase access to educational resources. By doing so, these fridge libraries can be used longer than what they are designed for.

4.Recycle Bins

These are not the usual recycle bins. Instead of plastic, paper, glass or cans… these bins are designed to collect second hand books and unwanted electrical appliances.

Students in some high schools create these recycle bins to help reduce wastes and also to help raise funds. For example, once, I had a student who created a corner on every floor of her dormitory in school to collect unwanted electrical appliances. She then sold off these unwanted electrical appliances to raise funds for a club in her school.

Last but not least, an example of book donation and collection by BookSmiles.

BookSmiles gives underserved children in New Jersey and Philadelphia the opportunity to build personal libraries.

Note: Of course, the above are just some examples I find interesting. There are many other examples out there which will also inspire you. Take this opportunity (before your college application) to explore further and take advantage of your talents and skills.
