Cornell CIS doctoral candidates received 5 of 36 Facebook fellowships, more than any other school; for reference, Carnegie Mellon was next with three. 1800 applications were fielded in total. Cornell CS earned two fellowships, while Cornell IS earned three.

Alane Suhr is a Ph.D. candidate in Computer Science at Cornell University, advised by Yoav Artzi. Alane’s research focuses on building systems that understand natural language in situated, collaborative interactions through designing tasks, model architectures, and learning algorithms. Alane received a BS in Computer Science and Engineering from Ohio State University in 2016.

Nirvan Tyagi is a Ph.D. candidate in the Department of Computer Science at Cornell University, advised by Tom Ristenpart and located at the Cornell Tech campus in New York City. His research focuses broadly on building private and accountable distributed systems. Most recently, he has worked on enabling content moderation in end-to-end encrypted messaging systems through user-driven reporting.
