拉夫堡大学的前身是成立于1909年的拉夫堡技术学院，1966年与拉夫堡教育学院联合组成拉夫堡技术大学，1996年兼并拉夫堡艺术和设计学院更名为拉夫堡大学。拉夫堡大学在教学质量方面也总排在前列，拥有较好的国际声誉，世界大学综合排名稳居250名左右。自1994年设立高等教育与延续教育女王周年奖以来，仅有拉夫堡大学、曼彻斯特大学和牛津大学三所大学荣获该奖项7次以上。
在2024年的QS世界排名中，拉夫堡大学位列212。
