3月19日这位同学发了一条朋友圈:我本来以为JHU就是极限,今早文书的老师的一个消息把我从现实拉进了梦。
这位同学申请过程中,GPA和GRE都不是优势,尤其是286的GRE对于能考证的TESOL项目来说相当于“死亡”短板。这位同学的优势在于毕业后有一年美国幼儿园的工作经验,以及本科阶段在美国幼儿园的实习经历,这也是简历和文书的重点。
这位同学在申请过程中十分配合,但在确定申请TESOL专业后对自己的职业目标不是很明确。结合在美国幼儿园123 Kindestart的工作经历,我们启发这位同学把职业目标定为帮助初代移民,特别是儿童学习英语,并在最终成立自己的教育科技公司。在文书的最初我们构想这位同学在Kinderstart时利用课余时间,和家长一起帮助亚裔学生Fei学习英语,融入美国学习生活的例子,也恰好是这个例子引出了这位同学未来的职业目标和学习的方向。
感谢这位同学对文书的老师的信任,整个简历和文书初稿只字未改,而且不断在微xin聊天里夸赞:“老师你太神了!”在帮助学生写完波士顿大学的文书后这位同学表示“老师,我觉得你不去媒体的新闻部真是可惜了!”
这位同学很喜欢和我们分享他的观点,也喜欢面对面交流,申请过程中包括头脑风暴、面试辅导和录取后续事宜梳理,我们面谈了四次。也正是一次次的交流让团队老师更了解他的想法,更能帮助他完成申请。
申请过程因为疫情的影响,这位同学被困在山东两个多月。没有网络也没有信号,成绩单发不出去、邮箱登不上去、GRE账户不能登录。老师们当时也在家隔离,只能帮他电话联系GRE国外考试部,帮助他缓解压力。最难的等待过去,就是一连串的好消息。一共申请了八所学校,七所拿到了录取。这个结果像梦,我们愿意为更多的学生筑梦!

She seldom talks, you know, just typical Asian kid”. What my colleges said about the Chinese girl Fei in my new class aroused my interest. I was her new math teacher at 123 Kinderstar Day School in New Jersey last year. When I tried to talk to her, she just answered me with a few simple words waring a warm smile on her cute face. I realized she could barely understanding English and that was the reason why she did not show her talent in the class. Therefore, I encouraged her to study English and reminder her parents to talk her in English at home. Weeks later, the Chinese girl started to be active and confident in the class and made a lot friends. Seeing the changes happened on her, I realized that the power of education and the English language.
With retrospect to my experience in learning English, I have much to share and have it systemized in the future study. A talent may not be the best teacher, but a diligent learner will give you advises when you meet difficulties. Likewise, as regard to teaching English, a native speaker may not understand what the nonnative speakers suffer. Second language acquisition for me is like a road, which needs to pave forward step by step. Different grammatical system, pronunciation method, alphabet and culture backgrounds were the knots hindered in my way, those experiences will definitely make me a good teacher in English learning.
