香港教育大学的歷史根源，可追溯至一八五三年于圣保罗书院开办的正规在职教师培训课程及一八八一年由香港总督轩尼诗爵士成立首间位于湾仔的师范学校。
二零一六年一月二十六日，行政长官会同行政会议批准教院正名大学。随着《2016年香港教育学院(修订)条例》于二零一六年五月二十七日刊宪，教院已正名为「香港教育大学」。首届毕业生于二零一六年毕业。二零一七年，教大公布《策略发展计划 2016-25》。教大所有学科范围于二零一八年四月一日起获授予全面自行评审资格。
香港教育大学（教大）为一所政府资助大学，提供副学位、学士学位、修读式学士后及研究生等课程。学校传承多所前师范院校在教师教育方面的深厚基础，致力于为香港学校培训优质教师。
每年，约有一千名专业的学前、小学及中学教师于本校毕业，而本港逾八成已完成培训的幼稚园及小学教师，以及三成已受训的中学教师均为教大毕业生。教大更是发展特殊教育的先锋。自2003/2004年度行政长官卓越教学奖设立以来，七成半获奖者亦为该校毕业生。
在2025年Quacquarelli Symonds(QS) 世界大学学科的最新排名中，香港教育大学在教育领域位列全球第12、亚洲第4。
