Day 15: Sunday, September 15, 2013
Days left: 15
Location: Washington, D.C. (District of Columbia)
The US Midwest is sometimes forgotten or misrepresented. Words such as ‘boring’, ‘flat’, ‘farmland’ or ‘where?’ come up, but most often, people will say that people in the Midwest (aka Midwesterners) are ‘friendly’.
I’d like to call it the “Land of the Nice”.
With our visits to St. Louis and Chicago in our second week of our “Vision on the Way” journey, it was overwhelmingly obvious how friendly people are – the courtesy, the politeness, and the asmiles.
One of the best things about this friendliness is that it comes from those whom you don’t necessarily meet, and those you aren’t paying to help with you some type of service.
In St. Louis, I had an opportunity to run through Forest Park (larger than Central Park by several hundred acres). I was invited for this run by Dr. Andrea Fan, whom I had met the previous day whom I had met the previous day. Originally from China, an alumna of Peking University, now working in Admissions at Saint Louis University, it was great to hear about her experience living in the U.S. and choosing the Midwest as her destination point.
However, besides our conversation, what became more telling were the people whom we were running past. With each person, I was greeted with a ‘good morning’ and a ‘hello’, a nod, and a smile. At one point, as Andrea and I were chatting, a woman saw our smiles, and said “Good morning happy people!”
This certainly brightened my morning…this friendliness is infectious. It makes me
want to give it back and to spread it to others.
The level of friendliness may not be a factor in choosing where to live; however, I do have one thing to say about being around people like this:
Although it’s not necessary…it’s kind of nice.
