Projectdescription
ADHDisoneofthemostcommonneurodevelopmentaldisordersamongchildren,affecting7.2%ofchildrengloballyand5%intheUK.IntheUK,thismeansthatatleast1-2childrenhaveADHDinaclassof30.Deficitsinhigher-ordercognitions(e.g.,inhibitorycontrol,workingmemory,multi-tasking)representthecoredeficitsinADHD,whichcouldresultinworseacademicperformanceandhigherrisksofbehavioralproblems.InchildrenwithADHD,physicalactivityhasbeenshowntoimprovehigher-ordercognitions,academicperformance,andpsychosocialbehaviors.However,theneurocognitivemechanismsunderlyingthepositiveeffectsofphysicalactivityareunderexplored.Further,todatetheeffectiveprotocolsofphysicalactivitythatcanmaximizephysicalactivityinducedcognitiveandphysicalbenefitsremaintobeelucidated.Abetterunderstandingoftheeffectiveprotocolsofphysicalactivityaswellastheunderlyingneurocognitivemechanismswillenablethedevelopmentofeffectivelifestyleinterventionsandstrategiestobenefitcognition,learning,andhealthinchildrenwithADHD.
ThisPhDprojectwillhavetwoprimaryaims.First,weaimtoestablishtheneurocognitivechangesthatcandrivetheeffectsofphysicalactivityoncognitionandlearningbystudyinga)specificneuralprocessesrelatingtoattention,executivefunction,andmemorymeasuredbyEEGandb)arousalregulationassessedbyheart-ratevariability.Wewill,then,examinewhetherchangesintheseneurocognitivemechanismsmediatetheeffectsofphysicalactivityonacademicproductivityandbehaviorsinchildrenwithADHD.Second,wewillbeseekingeffectiveprotocolsofphysicalactivitythatcanmaximizethephysicalactivityinducedbenefitstobrain,cognition,andlearning.Specifically,wewillbelookingattheeffectsofcognitive-motorphysicalactivities(e.g.,football,exergames)acrossbrainfunction,cognition,andacademicattainmentandseekingthepossibilitytoimplementhome-orschool-basedinterventions.
Overall,theprojectwillprovideexpertiseinarangeoftechniquesthatwillassessfitness(e.g.,VO2max),neuroelectricmarkers(e.g.,EEG),arousalregulation(e.g.,HRV),psychopathology(e.g.,externalizingproblems,ADHDsymptoms),andacademicproductivityandclassroom-relatedbehavior.Theprojectwillalsoprovideexpertiseinimplementingandadministratingdifferentprotocolsofphysicalactivityandexercisetrainings(e.g.,aerobicexercise,cognitive-motorexercise).Theresearchwillbeconductedinamulti-disciplinaryteamacrosstheDepartmentofPsychologyandDepartmentofAppliedandHumanSciencesatKingstonUniversityLondon,aswellaspotentialexternalcollaborators(e.g.,King’sCollegeLondon).Studentsmayalsohavetheopportunitytoanalyzeexistingdataset(theUKALSPACdataset)whenappropriate.Theexactprogramofworkwillbeestablishedbetweenthecandidateandtheleadsupervisorfollowingdiscussion.Inadditiontoresearchtraining,PhDstudentsatKingstonarelikelytobeofferedpaidteachingopportunitiesaspartoftheirtraining.
Selectioncriteria
Candidatesshouldhaveamaster’sdegreeinarelevantareatotheproject,suchasdevelopmentalpsychology,psychiatry,cognitiveneuroscience,behavioralscience,and/orexercisescience.Applicantswillhaveexcellentpracticallaboratoryskillsforworkingwithchildvolunteersandcolleaguesacrossdifferentresearchdisciplinesinaresearchsetting.Evidenceofresearchskillsandlaboratoryexperienceisrequired.Also,experienceinwritingcodesandscriptsindifferentdataprocessingenvironments(e.g.,MATLAB,R,Python)isstronglydesirable.
