AfterChinareverseditstemporaryrulesinplaceduringtheCOVID-19pandemicallowingonlinecoursesfromoverseasuniversitiestobedeliveredtostudentswithinChina,Chinesestudents-especiallythoseenrolledatuniversitiesintheSouthernHemisphere-arerushingtoprepareforareturn.TheGlobalTimeslearnedthatsomeuniversitiesinAustraliaareeagerlylookingforwardtowelcomingChinesestudentsandwillcontinuetosupportthosewhomayfacechallengesreturningtoonshorestudy.AtthetimeoftheannouncementbytheChineseeducationauthority,accordingtomediareports,about50,000ChinesenationalswithstudentvisasforAustraliabutwhohadremainedoffshoreareexpectedtorushintoAustralia.ThenewsemesterofmostAustralianuniversitiesandotheruniversitiesintheSouthernHemispherewillstartinlateFebruaryorearlyMarch.ThiswillsurelyhelptheAustralianeducationsectorrecoverandboostthecomprehensiveAustralianeconomicdevelopment,ChineseeducationinsiderstoldtheGlobalTimes.TheChineseServiceCenterforScholarlyExchange(CSCSE)underChina'sMinistryofEducationissuedanannouncementonSaturday,sayingthatithadmadethedecisiontocancelthespecialdegreecertificationrulesduringthepandemicinordertoeffectivelyprotecttheinterestsofoverseasstudentsandmaintaineducationalequity.Thecentersaiditwillnolongerrecognizeoverseasdegreesobtainedviaonlinelearningexceptinspecialcircumstances,anditurgedstudentstoreturntotheiroverseascampusesassoonaspossible."Wecan'twaittocelebratethereturnofourstudentstocampusforSemester1,andareplanningaccordingly,"aspokespersonoftheUniversityofSydneytoldGlobalTimesonMondayviaemail.Thespokespersonsaidthattheuniversitystaffexpectsthevastmajorityofstudents,includinginternationalstudents,tobeoncampusfortheSemester1(February20).Thespokespersonnotedthattheschoolisawareofthelogisticalchallengesforthestudents,particularlyaroundvisaprocessing,travelavailabilityandaccommodation,andtheywillcontinueconsultingwiththesector,governmentsandprovidersasrequired.TheuniversitywillalsocontinuetoprovideremoteofferingswhereverpossibleforoffshoreinternationalstudentswhoareunabletoreturntoAustralia.However,thedeliveryofon-campusunitsremotelywillbebannedandpre-pandemicface-to-faceteachingmodeswillreturnfromSeptember2,accordingtothespokesperson.Also,ProfessorSharonPickering,deputyvicechancellor(education)andseniorvice-presidentofMonashUniversityinAustralia,toldtheGlobalTimesonTuesdayviaemailthat"wewelcomeChina'sdecisiontoencouragestudentstoreturntoAustraliaandwillworkcloselywiththeAustraliangovernmenttoensuretheirsmoothreturn.""InternationalstudentsareanimportantpartoftheMonashcommunity.Notonlydotheyprovideaglobalperspectivetoourentirestudentexperience,theyaddvitalitytoourcampuses,andtothebroaderVictoriancommunity,"theuniversitynoted."We'rereallylookingforwardtowelcomingallourstudentsbacktoourcampusesnextmonth,sotheywillbeabletoengagewithotherstudentsandstaffface-to-faceandmakethemostofallthatcampuslifehastooffer,"aUniversityofMelbournespokespersontoldtheGlobalTimesonTuesday.AspokespersonfortheUniversityofQueenslandexpressedsimilaranticipationforwelcomingthereturnofinternationalstudentstocampusandwillcontinuetosupportstudentswhomayfacechallengesreturningtoonshorestudy.Duringthepandemic,thelossofChinesestudentswasagreateconomicshocktoAustralia,whichissufferingfromseverestagflation,andthereturnofChinesestudentsmaybethe"keytorecovery,"Chineseobserverspointedout.InternationaleducationisAustralia'sfourth-largestforeignexchangeearner,andChinasendsthelargestnumberofinternationalstudents,mediareportshavesaid.
Lastyear,Australianuniversitiesfacedseverefinancialdifficultiesandhadtoreducepay,cutteachersandemployees,anddropsomedisciplines,ChenHong,presidentoftheChineseAssociationofAustralianStudiesanddirectoroftheAustralianStudiesCentreatEastChinaNormalUniversity,toldtheGlobalTimesonWednesday.ChenlistedsomeofthemainfactorsbehindthestronganticipationfromtheAustralianeducationsectortowelcomemoreChinesestudentsback.Morethanjustboostingtheinternationaleducationindustrybypayingtuitionfees,ChinesestudentscanbringcomprehensiveeconomicbenefitsandsocialdevelopmenttoAustraliathroughhospitalityconsumption,travel,accommodationrentingandhomebuyingaswellasworkingaftergraduation,Chensaid.
AustraliahaslongbeenoneofthetopdestinationsforChinesestudentsduetoitsfineeducationqualityandculturaldiversity,theobservernoted.
A26-year-oldpostgraduatestudentsurnamedTongoftheUniversityofSydneyisbusybookingaflightandstudentaccommodationafterlearningofthenoticefromtheChineseeducationauthority.ShetoldtheGlobalTimesthatshewasabitpressedfortimebuthopefullyshecouldarriveinAustraliabeforethestartofthenewsemester.AcoupleofotherChinesestudentsofAustralianuniversitiesexpressedtheirexcitementattakingface-to-facecourses,buttheyalsonotedthetimeconstraintstogothroughtheprocedures.Afterlearningofthechallenges,theCSCSEmadeafurtherstatementonSundayofferingsomemoreflexibilityforstudentsreturningtoAustraliaandothernations.Forexample,anexceptionisbeingmadeforChinesestudentswhohavetoolittletimetoapplyforvisas,bookflightsandaccommodationifthissemesterisabouttostartorhasalreadystarted.Thecentersaidthosestudentscancontinueonlinecourseswhilegoingthroughtheprocedures.Incaseofvisarejections,flightcancellationsorinabilitytomakedormitoryreservations,itisrecommendedtokeeprelevantdocumentsandsubmitthemwiththedegreeapplicationforcertification,soastosuccessfullypassthecertification,saidthecenter.
