Overview
The Master of Medical Sciences (MMedSc) programme provides structured training in basic medical, clinical, and translational disciplines with the objectives to
equip postgraduates with advanced skills and expertise that can be applied in diverse research environments and healthcare settings;
foster a multidisciplinary approach to medical sciences; and
empower graduates to contribute to the advancement of medical science and improvement of patient outcomes through research and evidence-based practice.
The programme offers SEVEN Specialisations grouped under TWO Thematic Tracks, allowing students to focus on areas most relevant to their interests and career aspirations:
Track I - Clinical Investigation
1. Specialisation in Advanced Musculoskeletal Research and Practice
2. Specialisation in Clinical and Molecular Pathology, Haematopathology, and Immunology
3. Specialisation in Clinical Physics in Radiation Oncology and Medical Imaging
4. Specialisation in Metabolic Medicine
5. Specialisation in Pharmaceutical Science and Applications in Health Care
Track II - Genomics and Precision Medicine
6. Specialisation in Genetic Counselling
7. Specialisation in Genomics and Bioinformatics
MMedSc candidates are required to complete 18-24 credits of Core Courses, 18-24 credits of Specialised Courses and 27 credits of Capstone Experience in their chosen Specialisation.
The full-time MMedSc programme is of one year duration, but there are provisions for part time two-year day-release candidates.
The configuration of the programme permits those not seeking the MMedSc qualification to take only selected Core or Specialised Courses as occasional students.
Entrance Requirements
To be eligible for admission to the curriculum leading to the degree of Master of Medical Sciences, a candidate shall:
comply with the General Regulations;
comply with the Regulations for Taught Postgraduate Curricula;
hold a Bachelor's degree with honours of this University or a qualification of equivalent standard from this University or from another comparable institution accepted for this purpose;
satisfy the examiners in a qualifying examination if required;
for a candidate who is seeking admission on the basis of a qualification from a university or comparable institution outside of Hong Kong of which the language of teaching and/or examination is not English, shall satisfy the University English Language Requirements applicable to higher degrees as prescribed under General Regulation G2(b).
Advanced Standing of up to 12 credits may be granted to a candidate who has successfully completed equivalent course(s) no more than 5 years before admission to the curriculum, subject to the approval by the Faculty Board. Candidates seeking Advanced Standing should submit a written application to the Programme Office before commencement of the study.
