          Dynami/

The offer of admission that my student Helen received from Franklin and Marshall College, a top 50 U.S. liberal arts college, further confirmed my belief in her personal virtues and intellectual strength.

Upon meeting Helen for the first time, she impressed me with her independent mind and willingness to question not only established viewpoints and perceptions, but also her own assumptions about the world. Her curiosity and drive to discover answers to various academic and personal mysteries is a hallmark of her personality. It is this quality that American liberal arts colleges highly value, and as such her acceptance to a well-regarded institution like Franklin and Marshall College does not surprise me in the least.

Throughout our conversations, Helen has continuously shown her passion for debate and discussing new ideas. She also realizes the drawbacks and limitations of the Chinese education system in which she has been raised, while recognizing that these are “gaps” that an American liberal arts education can accordingly fill in and help her to further develop.
