Master of Science: Nutrition and Education

The Nutrition and Education 45-credit master's degree prepares graduates to work with individuals, groups, and communities in many settings, such as health promotion programs, health agencies, government and international agencies, businesses, hospitals, and private practice. The master's degree program also prepares graduates to serve as resource specialists and curriculum developers in schools, businesses, and universities.

The degree conforms to the guidelines for the training of Nutrition Education Specialists set forth by the Society for Nutrition Education. 

Students who pursue this degree are eligible to apply to the Dietetic Internship Program following completion of M.S. prerequisite courses, most of the master’s courses, and verification of completion of the Didactic Program in Dietetics.

Food Science Certificate Program

The Department of Food Science and Nutrition offers three certificate programs through IIT: Food Safety and Technology, Food Process Engineering, and Food Processing Specialist. Certificate programs provide a student with post baccalaureate knowledge in a specialized area. Students in these programs register as certificate students. Certificate programs typically require a total of four courses (12 credits) that must be completed in three years with a minimum GPA of 3.0/4.0. (Note: Some courses may have prerequisites.) Students who are admitted to master’s degree program may apply coursework previously taken in a certificate program towards the requirements for the master’s degree. A minimum TOEFL score of 550 is required.
