    Oral BiologyMSc ( 1 year Full-time )

    This programme will: 

      

    Focus on the latest scientific development related to the mouth and oral biology and health, it offers basic science in a clinical context 

    Give you hands-on clinical explanations of the major scientific developments relating to both preventative medicine techniques to avoid disease, and commercial research into products 

    Explore the latest developments in therapeutic dentistry; for example, the work being done into the oral delivery of drugs. 

      

    Structure

    MSc Oral biology is currently available for one year full-time study.

    Undertaking a masters programme is a serious commitment, with weekly contact hours being in addition to numerous hours of independent learning and research needed to progress at the required level. When coursework or examination deadlines are approaching independent learning hours may need to increase significantly. Please contact the course convenor for precise information on the number of contact hours per week for this programme.

    In addition to these basic science lectures, there will also be lectures from practising clinicians on current issues in modern clinical dentistry. 

    You will also complete a laboratory based project, which will be partly assessed by an oral examination. 

    Entry requirements

    You need to have a medical or dental degree, a non-clinical degree in basic sciences, biological sciences, or bioengineering, or the equivalent in professional qualifications and experience.

    Experimental Oral Pathology (Oral Sciences) MSc ( 1 year Full-time )

    This programme will: 

    Equip you with transferable laboratory skills, in addition to those gained as part of the research project 

    Teach you how to write papers and present them to your peers, and for publication 

    Allow you to spend time as an integrated part of a specific research project/team. This is a completely hands on experience of a real research question 

    Introduce you to experimental design and research. 

    Structure

    MSc in Experimental Oral Pathology (Oral Sciences) is currently available to study full-time for one year. 

    Your programme will be modular, focused on acquiring laboratory skills and knowledge. The taught modules provide the basic understanding to help with the research component. There is a structured course of seminars with associated practical work, dealing with the structure and behaviour of cells and tissues in health and disease. This core begins with fundamental and general concepts of cell biology and continues with the application of these concepts to a consideration of oral and dental disease. Related disciplines such as oral microbiology and immunology are also covered. 

    Throughout the programme, emphasis is placed on the evidence upon which the concepts are based and the way in which such evidence is obtained by observation and experiment. You are actively encouraged to take part in the seminars. 

    Running in parallel with the core programme are several related series of seminars dealing with research methods, statistics and techniques of fundamental importance to experimental pathology such as tissue culture, molecular biological techniques, immunocytochemistry, light and electron microscopy. You will undertake a laboratory-based research project in the final module of the programme, exploring any aspect of oral disease.

    In addition to your studies, you have a chance to interact with external specialists, through an extensive seminar series held within the Institute of Dentistry, the Blizard Institute of Cell and Molecular Sciences and Queen Mary as a whole. You will attend the annual Stem Cell conference as well as an HIV symposium hosted by the Blizard Institute.

    MSc Dental Materials Science 

    Course description

    This non-clinical course is run jointly with the Faculty of Engineering. It gives you a comprehensive education in basic materials science and the use of materials in dentistry and surgery. 

    You’ll be taught by some of the leading academics in the fields of bio and dental materials science, tissue engineering, materials characterisation and biomedical engineering. You’ll also learn the principles of research and different techniques for evaluating dental materials and related health technologies.

    You’ll need a dental or medical degree, or a minimum of a 2:1 honours degree in science or engineering from a recognised institution. Other degree-level qualifications may be suitable so please contact us for advice.

    This MSc programme is designed to provide students with an in-depth working knowledge of the principles and practice related to Oral Sciences. The major strength of this programme, and what sets its apart from other Oral Sciences based MSc programmes offered in the UK, is its focus on research. You will gain a wealth of theoretical and practical knowledge related to Oral Sciences research and spend time in the laboratories conducting your own research project under the direction of internationally renowned members from the Oral Sciences Research Group located within Glasgow Dental School. Students will experience and participate in cutting edge research within the theme while learning techniques widely relevant to biomedical sciences.

    Admissions criteria

    This course is suitable for dentists, physicians, biologists, biochemists, biomedical engineers, chemists or pharmacists. 

    Applicants should possess a minimum second class honours degree (or equivalent), in clinical dental (BDS, MBBS, BSc Therapy and Hygiene), Biology, Biochemistry, Biomedical engineering medical or pharmacy backgrounds. 

    Applicants whose first language is not English will be required to obtain an overall IELTS score of 6.5 (with no less than a score of 5.5 in each of the four bands) or an equivalent qualification – this test should have been taken within 2 years of commencement of study. Applicants are required to have achieved the IELTS prior to an application being submitted. 

    Applications must be submitted through the University's Online Application System. 

    Applicants need to upload a CV which details all relevant qualifications achieved or pending, and two academic references. 

    Applicants will be interviewed as part of the admissions process. Interviews will be performed throughout the year using Skype.
