Renowned for its size and cold winters, the University of Minnesota offers a wide array of opportunities to its students. It has an urban setting as its located in the Twin Cities, Minneapolis and Saint Paul that together have a population of roughly 3.87 million.
Founded in 1851, the school is made up of two campuses with three main sections. The Mississippi River divides the Minneapolis campus into an East and West Bank and is where some of the school’s colleges and most of its dormitories, sororities and fraternities are situated. The school’s the College of Food, Agricultural, and Natural Resource Sciences; the College of Biological Sciences; the College of Veterinary Medicine; and the College of Continuing Studies are all held on the Saint Paul campus. A mix of modern and traditional architecture can found on both campuses, which are linked by a free bus service and are only five miles apart.
Apart from its generous grounds the size of the school is also emphasize by its enrollment of over 45,000 students. Furthermore, students may have difficulty in choosing a field to study as the Minnesota offers more than 140 undergraduate majors. Nearly every one of the university’s colleges has its own library and offer students good places to study and keep warm.
The latter is important as the winters can be quite cold due to its location in the northern and central portion of the U.S. where the annual snow fall for the Twin Cities is 54 inches. Fortunately, many campus buildings are linked together underground through tunnels to help students stay out of the cold, that is for those who want to. Every winter there is Snow Week, and skiers and skaters have a number of great sites to visit in Minnesota.
As Minnesota has been nicknamed the Gopher State the U of M’s football team and mascot, Goldy, refer to themselves as Gophers. The school’s colors are maroon and gold, students get into school spirit on Maroon and Gold Fridays when Goldy hands out prizes to students wearing the university’s colors. Along with U of M’s long history of football it is also well regarded in both women’s and men’s hockey, as the former has won three national championships and the latter has won five.
Since 1914 the school has held an annual tradition every autumn called Homecoming where the campus community, alumni and friends gather to celebrate school spirit. The event features student sports, philanthropy competitions, lip sync performances, a bonfire, pep fest and parade, the traditional Gopher homecoming football game, and a lot more.
Every April the school engages in another tradition called Spring Jam that normally lasts for week and celebrates warm weather and the end of the semester. This student-run event features concerts, a student band and student dance competitions, sports, an art festival, philanthropy, contests, freed food, and an outdoor community block party.
