Master of Fine Arts in Film & Televison Production

The Film & Television Production program emphasizes exploration of the student filmmaker's creative voice through hands-on filmmaking. Students learn all aspects of cinematic storytelling from writing and producing to directing, post-production and cinematography. The faculty panel evaluates applications for originality, clarity, personal insight and artistic excellence.

All students who complete the SCA graduate program in Film and Television Production receive the same degree - an M.F.A. in Film and Television Production. All are introduced to the same crafts: producing, writing, directing, cinematography, editing and sound, and all learn that the test of any craft in a given project is whether it makes the project better.

The curriculum, which takes three years and requires at least 52 units, is designed to help students find their place in the media future. Each year has a perspective, from wide to narrow. In year one, each student is given a general introduction to media-making; all take the same courses and are required to practice all the basic crafts. In year two, students specialize in their personal interests, take crew positions on productions and elect craft seminars from several options. We advise developing skills in at least two crafts. Courses in film history and theory enhance the production experience.

    Cinematic Arts Supplemental Materials:

All of the following materials must be submitted through the University's Graduate Online Application. Materials sent by mail will not be accepted. The online system may have provision for materials required by other programs, but we only require submission of materials specified herein.

These materials must include the applicant's name at the top of each page. Clearly title all documents with the appropriate supplemental document title (e.g. Personal Statement, Writing Sample C, etc.).

    Graduate University Application
The application to the USC Graduate School is through the online application system
(USC Graduate Application). On this system, the applicant must upload the following materials required by the Film & Television Production program.

If you experience any technical issues, please contact the Apply Yourself Help Center by email at ayhelp@usc.edu.

    1         Cinematic Arts Personal Statement

The personal statement will be read by the Film & Television Production Admission Committee as a measure of creativity, self-awareness and vision. We are looking for a sense of you as a unique individual and how your distinctive experiences, characteristics, background, values and/or views of the world have shaped who you are and what you want to say as a creative filmmaker. We want to know about the kind of stories you want to tell. Bear in mind that enthusiasm for watching films, descriptions of your favorite films and the involvement in the filmmaking process is common in most candidates. As a result, we encourage that you focus on your individuality. Note that there is no standard format or correct answer. (1,000 words or less)

2         Writing Samples (choose one-clearly title which writing sample you choose)

l  An outline for a four-minute film that contains no dialogue. It can be fiction or non-fiction. The story has to be communicated visually. (no more than two pages)

l  A dialogue scene between two people. Provide a one-paragraph introduction describing the two characters in screenplay format. (no more than three pages)

l  Describe a concept for a feature-length movie, fiction or documentary, which you would like to develop. (no more than two pages)

3         Visual Samples (choose one) Provide the URL for your visual sample

Applicants MUST submit a URL for their visual sample. Hardcopy visual samples will not be accepted. You may use websites such as VIMEO, YouTube, or any other site that the Committee can access in the United States. To ensure committee access, we recommend that you do not password protect your visual samples.

It is essential that you specify what role(s) you have played in your visual sample.

Video Option:Create a brief narrative video in which you had a major creative role. The video can be either live-action or animation, fiction or documentary, but it should reflect your aesthetic tastes and intellectual and emotional interests. (No longer than five minutes.)

Photo Option:Prepare a series of eight photographs you have taken which, when viewed in a specific sequence, portray a unique and original character or which tells a simple narrative story. Also, include a one-page narrative about the character being portrayed in the photos. The images may either be black-and-white or in color. Please upload the required one page narrative onto the online application. Please clearly label this document as "Visual Sample - Photo Option Narrative".

    4         Creative Portfolio List

The portfolio list is a written record of the applicant's creative material. It should include a concise description of each project, the month and year the project was completed, the applicant's creative role and the purpose of the project. The material, which does not need to be film- or television-related, should give an idea of the range and depth of the applicant's creative ability. Formal recognition - such as awards, publications, jobs and exhibitions - should be noted. The name of the institution or publication should be included when listing creative materials prepared for a class or publication. Please do not submit any of these materials to us - this is just a list of your work. An example of the portfolio list is below:

July 2008, A Day in the Life, digital video, 12 minutes. Position: writer/director. A documentary on a homeless Iraq vet who has lived on the streets since his return from the military. Created for senior-year multimedia term project, San Raphael High School, Miami, Florida.

March 2008, Doorways, a series of 5 black-and-white photographs. Position: photographer. "Second Prize Winner" in the Des Moines Sunday Journal photo contest.

February 2007, Cellomorphosis, short story. Position: writer. A variation on the novella by Franz Kafka; published in Writing, vol. IV, 2007, at Amherst College, Amherst, Massachusetts.

5         Letters of Recommendation (One letter must be an academic reference)

Three letters of recommendation are required. Applicants must submit their letters electronically through the "Recommendation" system on the online application. Recommenders who are unwilling to use the online recommendation process may send their letters to USC Graduate Admissions. Applicants are responsible for verifying that the letters have been received.

    Production/Directing MFA

The UCLA Master of Fine Arts degree in Production with an emphasis in Directing is a four year program designed to develop artists in film and video. For over half a century we have trained students in all the arts and crafts of media production while also expanding their understanding of the critical, theoretical and historical components of these art forms. Our goal is to infuse the highest standards of craftsmanship with the imaginative freedom and sense of social responsibility that gives screen storytellers such as Francis Ford Coppola (The Godfather), Alexander Payne (Sideways), Gore Verbinski (The Ring), and hundreds of others, the depth of craftsmanship that frees them to take creative risks.

At every stage of the curriculum our students are at work on their own films.

    The art of collaboration

The first year of the program is an intensive workshop in the collaborative process of production that culminates in each student completing a short (2-5 minute) sync sound 16mm film. The curriculum includes film and television writing, directing, cinematography, editing, sound, and production planning.

Working closely with a faculty mentor on an advanced project

The second year of the program allows for the further development of the student-mentor relationship as the student completes an advanced directing project in narrative, non-narrative or experimental film or video, and takes critical studies and advanced craft courses.

Thesis production launched in third year

No later than the second quarter of the third year, the student begins work on his or her thesis production, which is to be completed by the end of the fourth year. Thesis productions can be in either medium, in any form, with a maximum length of 30 minutes.
