美国生物相关专业申请攻略(三)---生物工程
生物工程是指应用生物学和工程学的原理,对生物材料、生物所特有的功能,定向地组建成具有特定性状的生物新品种的综合性的科学技术。生物工程是把生物技术的研究结果转变为工业的生产和经济效益,是集合技术和工程的一门学科,特别的注重实际生产。
目前美国有世界知名的5大生物产业基地:波士顿、旧金山湾、华盛顿、圣地亚哥和北卡罗来纳研究三角园,成为地方经济支柱和美国生物技术产业化的基础。这五大基地拥有实力雄厚的大学和科研机构做坚强的后盾。如波士顿的Harvard University和MIT;旧金山湾的UCB、UCLA和Stanford;华盛顿地区则云集了一批世界级的教学、研究和管理机构,如美国国家卫生研究院、美国食品和药物管理局、霍华德.休斯医学院研究实验室、Maryland University研究中心和Johns Hopkins University等;圣地亚哥地区则有UCSD的雅各布工程学院支撑;北卡罗来纳研究三角园则紧邻北卡罗来纳州著名的Duke University和UIUC。

Applicants are required to have completed a B.S. and/or M.S. degree by time of admission in a branch of engineering, natural sciences, mathematics, or quantitative life sciences. M.S. and Ph.D. applicants must have a GPA of 3.4 or better in technical courses. Students with a B.S. in engineering or physics:
The typical applicant has a minimum background of:
1. One course in biochemistry
2. One course in either basic biology or introductory physiology, including a lab
3. One course in the biological sciences such as anatomy, microbiology, experimental psychology, physiology, pharmacology, etc.
Students with a B.S. or B.A. in other areas:
(Those with majors such as experimental psychology, physiology, microbiology, zoology, or biochemistry)
The courses noted above, plus:
1. Two terms of college physics
2. Mathematics through differential equations
3. One course in basic electronic circuits
4. Two courses in either mechanics, fluid mechanics, or thermodynamics
从上面这两个学校的录取要求可以看出,美国生物工程专业更倾向招收本科是工程专业背景的学生,而对生物类的背景要求并不是很高,只要学过几门基础的生物科学的课程即可。总结来看,最希望学生有较高的数学基础,其次有物理和工程的背景,还有化学,和生物的基础课程。申请美国生物工程专业的研究生难度很大,学生既要有很好的工科背景,GPA成绩要高,还要修过生物科学和化学等专业,其次相关的科研能力也是学校特别看重的。同学们申请这个专业的时候,一定要注意提早规划,修够课程,还需要努力提升自己的软硬件综合能力。
