Congratulations again on receiving your offer for a place on the MA Global Journalism at the Department of Journalism Studies here at the University of Sheffield.

We are really looking forward to welcoming you here at our Department and I thought it would be nice to keep you informed about the exciting things we are planning for the next academic year!

As you know these are exciting times for the media and we are keen on providing you with an in-depth understanding of current media phenomena such as the weaponisation of both the left-wing and right-wing media, the use of social media to spread fake news in the era of post-truth politics and the return to traditional journalistic values. We are the first Department to look at these vital debates from both sociological and data-driven approaches equipping you with valuable insights that will benefit your future career and impress your future employers.

Just as the media is weaponised it is also victimised and understanding the debates surrounding this issue is as vital as understanding weaponisation. The Centre for Freedom of the Media (CFOM), which is based in our Department, closely works with UNESCO and policy-makers across the world. Its latest research feeds directly into our teaching and gives you unique insights into journalistic environments across the world.

We are also currently developing more opportunities for you to get some hands on practical experience and to develop your digital skills – much desired by employers across the world!
