    Dear Lux

I would like to update you on how The University of Western Australia is working towards supporting the smooth transition of students who were in China on or after February 1 and whose ability to get to Perth for Semester 1 classes has been impacted by the current travel restrictions. We remain committed to ensuring that any impact to their education at UWA is minimised.

Importantly you should note that Semester 1 enrolment and start dates remain open for these students whilst we work through flexible study options. Your students should proceed with their UWA enrolment. The original advice that they must arrive on campus by 9 March is now no longer relevant.

I would like to acknowledge that for many of you in our valued community this has been a challenging start to the year. Our global network of education representatives remain in our thoughts and we hope that you and your family remain safe and well.

As a university community, we are working together right now to find achievable solutions that will help your students begin their UWA journey.

We are exploring all study options and flexible learning solutions which are available to your students so they can continue to plan their studies with confidence.

Your students from China who may be about to commence study with UWA will shortly receive the below communication confirming our commitment to the following:

    Flexible study

If you can arrive in Perth by 31 March

You can start your studies via a blended learning model on 24 February, with lecture recordings and other remote delivery techniques giving you access to the first four weeks of teaching. When you arrive in Perth, we’ll work with you on a study plan to ensure you can progress in time for the start of Semester 2 on 27 July (subject to achieving satisfactory academic standards). We will work with you on a unit-by-unit basis to deal with any assessment issues that might arise from your late arrival.

If you can arrive in Perth for Semester 2 (27 July)

We will guarantee you an individualised study plan so you can catch up on course content and still graduate according to your original schedule. This applies to all students, including those on special pathway programs. We are working on the possibility of continuing to deliver to you via a blended learning model throughout the remainder of Semester 1. If this is not possible we will find other ways for you to catch up on content, in such a situation your individual study plan may include:

    • Completing two units in an intensive flexible learning mode, and then catching up on other units once you arrive in Perth
    • Completing the first four weeks of four units in a flexible learning mode, and finishing these units through face-to-face classes in Perth during non-standard teaching periods
    • Cross-institutional enrolment as appropriate
    • Summer and/or winter catch-up units (this may require you to stay in Perth outside of standard semester dates)

    Flexible enrolment

We understand this situation is changing rapidly. You will be able to withdraw without academic penalty until the end of semester. Any fees incurred would be credited towards future study at UWA.

    Accepting your UWA offer

If you are yet to do so, please accept your offer, and then follow the prompts on UniStart to facilitate your enrolment. Unistart contains helpful videos to step you through the enrolment process in studentConnect. If you would like advice on enrolling in units, please email us via info@uwa.edu.au.

If you need further personalised advice, please contact info@uwa.edu.au (making sure to include your course of study and current location) or call +86 400 120 0259 (toll free number within China) or +61 1800 518 018 (toll free number within Australia) between 10am-4pm (AWST).

You can also visit our novel coronavirus FAQ page.

Be assured that we will continue to update you on further details of our solutions to both support you and minimise the impact on your students.

    Warm regards, Professor David Sadler

    Deputy Vice Chancellor (Education)
