Position

Research Assistant

Summary

The Morality Lab at Boston College, led by Liane Young, is seeking a full-time Research Analyst, with a two-year commitment. Applications will be reviewed on a rolling basis until the position has been filled, with the position starting as early as May 2021 and no later than July 2021. The Research Analyst will work in tandem with a full-time lab manager, who will hold more administrative duties. We expect that the position will be remote until September 2021, after which the RA will be asked to work in person in Boston. The Research Analyst will also have opportunities to design, conduct, publish and present original research projects. This position is ideal for individuals who are interested in applying to graduate school.

Graduate students and postdocs in the Morality Lab research diverse topics related to social and moral cognition: for example, the role of reasoning in moral thought and action, the involvement of theory of mind across social and relational contexts (e.g., cooperation vs competition), social learning and prediction error, the tradeoff between principles of moral obligation and impartiality, and the impact of social norms on virtuous behavior. The lab uses behavioral methods (e.g., online data collection), fMRI, TMS, and computational modeling, in both typical and atypical populations, adults and children. Learn more by visiting http://moralitylab.bc.edu/.

Responsibilities

  • Assisting graduate students and postdocs in all lines of research (e.g. recruiting participants, collecting and analyzing behavioral and fMRI data, mentoring and training undergraduate research assistants and senior lab members)

  • Ensuring that the lab is active in supporting the best practices of open and reproducible science (e.g. pre-registering studies, making datasets and analysis scripts publicly available, etc.)

  • Maintaining and updating lab analysis scripts (particularly fMRI scripts) to be in line with current and emerging practices; maintaining detailed and comprehensible documentation of lab scripts/practices

Qualifications

  • Candidates should have a B.A./B.S. in psychology, neuroscience, cognitive science, computer science, or a related field.

  • Candidates should have prior research experience, as well as knowledge of the statistical methods and experimental designs that are commonly used in psychological research.

  • Candidates should also have a strong background in programming (see below).

  • Finally, candidates should have strong organizational abilities, be independent and eager to learn new skills on their own, and be able to work well with others, as effective and patient communicators.

  • experience analyzing neuroimaging data,

  • a desire to improve upon existing analytical techniques currently used in the lab.

Lab Manager/Research Assistant Position at Environmental Neuroscience Lab

Position

Lab Manager/Research Assistant

Summary

A research assistant/lab manager position will be available starting in the Spring/Summer of 2021 in the Environmental Neuroscience Lab (ENL) in the Department of Psychology at the University of Chicago.
We at the ENL have had great success in placing former lab managers in Psychology Ph.D. programs such as the University of Chicago, University of Pittsburgh, and Yale University. Lab managers typically co-author 1 to 2 publications a year, which helps their career trajectories for being admitted into top graduate programs in Psychology.
As environmental neuroscientists, we study the interactions of brain functioning, individual behavior, group behavior, and the external physical environment and how those interactions vary across space and time. We define environmental neuroscience as the scientific study of brain-mediated, bidirectional relationships between organisms and their social and physical environments. While we primarily focus on humans, we also perform some research on non-human animals. Under this broad umbrella, our specific research projects include:
  • The influence of the natural and built environment on affect, cognition and collective behaviors (e.g., crime)

  • Attention and memory

  • Brain network efficiency and its relationship to broad behaviors (e.g., self-control)

  • Multivariate analysis

  • Motivation and Effort

  • Worry, rumination, and depression and other psychopathologies and their relationships to brain measures of cognitive effort (such as non-linear dynamics)
This is an excellent position for someone who would like to obtain additional research experience in cognitive neuroscience and develop additional computational skills before applying to graduate school.

Responsibilities

Primary duties include a mix of lab management tasks and research-oriented tasks.

Lab management tasks include:

  • recruiting participants

  • helping with IRB approvals

  • providing support for lab personnel

  • website maintenance

  • social media management

  • carrying out administrative duties such as ordering equipment, maintaining paperwork and electronic materials, and the general maintenance of the day-to-day operations of the lab

Research-oriented tasks include:

  • training/testing human subjects in both neuroimaging (fMRI & fNIRS), eye-tracking and behavioral experiments

  • designing and programming experiments

  • analyzing experimental data

  • preparing manuscripts for publication

Qualifications

Education

  • A bachelor’s (or higher) in cognitive science, neuroscience, computer science, psychology, biology, math or other related fields.

Experience

  • Research experience in cognitive neuroscience (e.g., conducting and analyzing fMRI studies) would be ideal, but not required.

Competencies

  • Strong math and computer programming skills (especially MATLAB, R and/or Python) are required, though we will help to improve candidate’s computational skills through lab training and collaborative research projects.

  • Should be self-motivated, independent, and reliable.

  • Strong organizational and communication skills are essential.

Apply

Interested parties should email a CV, names of references, and a brief statement of interest to Marc Berman: bermanlab.uchicago@gmail.com

Candidates who can serve in this position for 2 years will be preferred.
