UNSW Sydney welcomes the NSW Government’s announcement of a plan to start returning international students to NSW. We have missed the many contributions international students make to our community and are looking forward to having our international students back on campus. The pilot plan is a joint undertaking between the NSW Government, Study NSW and all NSW and ACT universities and aims to see 500 fully vaccinated students return before December.
We understand that many of our students and future students are keen to find out more details and whether they will be eligible to return under the plan. We are currently finalising details and will communicate this information in the coming weeks. Only a small number of UNSW students will be eligible to return in the initial phase but please be assured that we will continue to provide remote and online learning options for all our current and commencing students overseas for as long as that is required. While the pilot will initially only bring a small number of international students back to Australia, it's an important milestone that will lay the foundation for the safe return of more students in the future.
What are the eligibility criteria for participating in the pilot scheme?
Priority will be given to continuing students who are nearing the completion of their studies or have an ‘in-person’ or professional experience requirement to complete or continue their studies. Eligible students will be contacted directly and formally invited to participate in the program.
Where will students participating in the pilot scheme come from?
Students will come from a range of source countries and will be contacted directly.
How much will it cost students to participate in the pilot scheme?
The cost to return international students will be jointly borne by UNSW, accommodation providers and the returning students. Students will be required to cover all visa related costs, pre-departure health screening and testing costs and all travel and flight costs to Sydney airport. Eligible students will be provided with final details including costs, departure dates and arrangements before they need to make the decision to formally participate.
Which airports will the charter flights for the pilot scheme leave from?
At this time, flights will depart from Singapore. Additional departure hubs maybe added in the future.
Are UNSW Global students eligible for the pilot scheme?
Priority is being given to UNSW Sydney continuing students only who are nearing the completion of their studies or have an ‘in-person’ or professional experience requirement to complete or continue their studies will be eligible to return in the initial phase. As such, at this stage, UNSW Global students are not eligible to participate in the pilot scheme, but we are hopeful that the scheme will enable a wider range of students to be able to enter NSW in future.
I’m not part of the priority cohort, when can I expect to return?
UNSW will continue to work with the NSW and Federal Governments and Study NSW to bring all our students back as soon as it is practicably possible and safe to do so. As more and more students return, we expect eligibility to widen.
Where can I find out further information?
