    2018-08-28
    Dear all

Please read the email below. A Lancaster student has been contacted by a team who have used a scam to take money from them.

Please read below for what happened and if you are contacted by anyone who says that they are the police, immigration, or a Visa authority for example do not provide them with any personal information or make any payments. Please report it as soon as possible.

Approximately 3 days ago a current Lancaster student was contacted on their phone from a Chinese phone number that they did not recognise. The caller explained that they were from a police station in China calling about an anomaly with the student's Visa. They said if they did not follow the next instructions the Visa would be invalid and the student would be arrested in the UK.

The call was transferred between the 'police officer' and someone who said they were from immigration. Between the 2 persons they explained that the student needed to make a bank transfer from the account used to apply for the Visa to verify its authenticity, which was done. As there has been a Visa fraud involving a lot of people the student was asked not to talk to anyone about this and to delete social media from their phone.

The student was asked to install a program called 'Telegram' on their phone where the callers would contact them by text and voice message to continue the discussion. The student was asked for personal information about their home and UK address, how much money they had and their bank details.

Following conversation with the police the student was advised that the police and Visa authority would never ask for money in this manner.
