Many of us are very fortunate to have received good news from our target universities. Congrats! Now comes the fun, but slightly stressful, process of deciding where to attend. In this post I will share two big picture considerations that helped me decide between UChicago, University of Washington, and the United States Military Academy at West Point.

我们之中许多人已经幸运地收到自己理想学府的录取信函。在这里首先要恭喜你！不过，接下来这条必经之路，既让人略感压力，又实在充满趣味——“我到底该选择哪所学校？”这篇文章中，我将会与你们分享两个帮助我在芝加哥大学、华盛顿大学以及西点军校之间作出决定的重要因素。

University Culture will greatly impact your campus experience. Public universities (like the University of Washington) typically have more activities, diversity, and school spirit with athletics. Liberal Arts Colleges frequently have small class sizes, more access to professors, and very tight-knit campus communities. Research universities (like UChicago) are known for their intellectual rigor and academic opportunities while military academics (like West Point) are known for their disciplined culture and physical requirements.

大学的校园文化会对你的学习经历带来极大影响。公立学校（如华盛顿大学）通常会有更丰富的活动、文化差异性和校园竞技运动精神。文理学院则胜在小规模课堂教学、更亲密的师生距离以及非常紧密连接的校园社区。研究性大学（比如芝加哥大学）又因其严谨的学术态度和大量学术机会而著名。与此同时，军事院校（如西点军校）则由于其严守纪律的校风和苛刻的体能要求而被众所周知。

Learn more about the culture of your admitted universities because you want to make sure it’s the right fit. My goal for college was to challenge myself and learn as much as possible. I visited UW, West Point and UChicago and decided that Chicago provided the best opportunity for me to continue activities I was passionate about (track, debate, and chess) while expanding my horizons (learning economics, finance, and international relations).

要想确保能选到真正适合自己的学校，你最好先对已录取你的大学的校园文化做一个深入了解。我对大学生活的目标在于可以挑战自我并且尽可能地学习新知。我去实地考察过华盛顿大学、西点军校和芝加哥大学，最终决定选择后者，因为芝加哥大学为我提供了最好的机会去参与我所热衷的事务（如径赛、辩论和国际象棋），同时她还能帮助我拓宽的眼界（能够同时学习经济、金融和国际关系方面的知识）。

The Location of the university can be defining for your experience as well. Universities in small communities traditionally have close relationships with the surrounding area. The town rallies around the local school and significantly caters to the student population. Classic examples include: the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor or Dartmouth College in Hanover, New Hampshire. Universities in urban communities benefit from abundant resources and opportunities beyond the campus walls. Students will typically spend more of their time in the adjacent city.

学校的地理位置同样也是决定你大学生活好坏的重要因素。坐落于传统小型市区的大学通常可以与周边区域建立起紧密的联系。而校园周边的城镇集会很大程度上也能够迎合和满足学生群体的需要。这一方面的经典例子诸如：密歇根大学安阿伯分校，或坐落于新罕布什尔州汉诺威小镇的达特茅茨学院。地处市区的大学则相对更能获益于学校附近丰富的资源和机遇。一般来说，学生们会在毗邻学校的城市度过大部分时光。

My time at UChicago was greatly shaped by the proximity to the city. I got involved with youth mentoring projects in the neighborhood that taught me a lot about leadership and how much fun you can have while making a difference. I attended a community church where I made many friends I otherwise never would have met. I was able to explore Chicago’s world-class museums and architecture while trying lots of ethnic restaurants (Greek, Polish, Mexican, Italian, and Chinese hotpot are my favorites!). I also really enjoyed running through surrounding neighborhoods and swimming in Lake Michigan, excellent ways to keep fit with friends.

我在芝加哥大学读书的经历深受邻近城市这一点的影响。我曾参与校园周边发起的青年辅导项目，从中了解了许多关于培养领导能力方面的知识，同时也认识到，创造不同到底可以让自己收获多少乐趣。我那时还加入了一个社区教堂，并结识了不少在别处无缘相遇的挚友。我因的地理位置而得以参观和体验芝加哥世界级的博物馆及建筑、品尝不同民族特色的餐厅（如希腊菜、波兰菜、墨西哥菜和意大利菜，当然，我的最爱还是火锅）。我也非常享受自己在校园附近跑步、在密歇根湖游泳的日子——这都是能和朋友们一起保持健康身材的好方式。
