开学三问：思考一下这些问题

1. What do you want out of it?

1.你想从大学里获得什么？

Set yourself clear goals at the beginning of the year: write them out explicitly and put them up somewhere visible in your room.

在开学时设定明确的目标：把它们精准地写下来，贴在你房间里明显的位置。

It seems simple, but we forget all too often what our original motivations were. Your goals might seem obvious to you now, but when you are eventually faced with a choice between different classes, work vs. play, or whether to take that extra opportunity or not, it's crucial that you think clearly. You can only do that if you know what you're there for!

这看上去很简单，但是我们常常会忘记我们最初的动机是什么。也许你的目标现在看起来很明确，但是当你最终面临取舍哪门课程，选择学习还是玩乐，面对新的机会是选择还是放弃的时候，你是否还能保持清醒的头脑？只有你清楚地知道你上大学的目的，你才能做到这一点。

2. Who do you want to meet?

2.你想结识什么人？

In some academic contexts, most of your learning comes from your peers. In others, the best learning is done with professors and professionals. You should ask yourself before you begin a new program: Who am I here to meet?

在某些学术环境下，你主要是这位同学那里学习。而在另外的一些环境里，你是从教授和专业人士那里学习。在一个新的课程或者项目开始之前，你要问自己：我在这里要结识什么人？

Are you there to get to know the top researchers in the field, or are you looking to gain a trusted group of life-long friends, advisors, and business partners? The answer doesn't need to be one or the other. The point is that time is precious, especially in one or two year master's programs, and if you don't know who you want to meet, you won't meet them!

是要结识这个领域里最顶尖的研究者还是去寻求和结交可以信赖的一辈子的朋友、导师和商业伙伴？答案并不一定是唯一的。时间很宝贵，尤其是一年或者两年的研究生课程，如果你不清楚要结识谁，你就不会碰到他们！

3. What's something I've never done before?

3．什么是你以前没有尝试过的？

This last question is all too often overlooked but it's essential. We all go to school to further our education and to grow. But you can't grow unless you try new, difficult, and sometimes scary things. Ask yourself before the start of the year: what's something I've never done before that I can try this year? Thinking about new ventures in this way can yield great results: maybe you only go whitewater rafting once, or maybe you love it and it becomes a life-long passion. Try to find at least one thing you're curious about and investigate it.

最后这个问题常常被忽略，但却是至关重要的。我们上学是为了继续接受教育和成长，但是如果你不尝试新的、难的甚至有时是令人畏惧的东西，你就不能成长。在开学前问自己：哪些是我从来没有做过但是今年准备尝试的事情？新的探索可能会产生重大影响：可能你只尝试一次白水漂流就会着迷，它成了你终生热爱的活动。至少尝试和探索一件你好奇的事情。
